Since I'm
A). Lazy
B). Predictable

then yeah it's exactly the same list, and the airwing is exactly the same as last time it went to a tournament (there's 16 fightas because I had to drop 4 to fit a landa in).

Those ork's sure do love nid's, It's a shame MikeT isn't bringing his, they seem to have a pheromone lure for planes.

I'm really curious how you make this build work Richard..... I've taken it several times and only won once

I almost hope I end up getting a kicking from you so I can see how to use it best!!

Well, the dust has settled after a good days wargaming, and while I'll wait for Steve54 to post up the full results, I wanted to say thanks to Lawhawk, Steve54 & Kyussinchains for three great games.
Thanks too to all the guys who travelled down from the Northern Wastes & London, and up from the South to make the event happen.

Congrats too to Noz & Nat for their awards - well deserved both :)

Cheers
Reedar

Thanks to everyone who attended, Steve54 for keeping things running in their usual efficient and fun way (and for driving the northern contingent down! Much appreciated!) as well as triple helix for hosting, shame they're downsizing, it's a great venue!

Thanks also to BrokenBayonet, MikeT and Reedar for three fantastic games!

I'll give some details later

Thanks to everybody who came along yesterday to a really fun event - especially Reedar for marshalling a great local turnout Tim+Dave for helping run things and Triple Helix for hosting us. Info on next years Counterattack will be available over the summer. Also great to have so many new players who we will hopefully see again soon

Most sporting player went to Ashley Marsh (Noz) in his first event
Best Armies went to Reedar and Kyussinchains for their great Orks and Marines

Provisional results
1 MikeT (Tsons)
2 Tiny-Tim (Necrons)
3 Nat (Steel Legion)
4 RichardL (Steel Legion)
5 Dptdexys (Ulthwe)
6 Steve54 (codex SM)
7 reedar (orks)
8 Consulavengingangel (Black Legion)
9 Kyussinchains (Codex SM)
10 Alansa (tyranids)
11 Noz (Orks)
12 jon (Iyanden)
13 Brokenbayonet (Biel tan)
14 Mark F (Steel Legion)
15 Duncan (Vanaheim)
16 Layhock (Biel tan)

That sets up the Championship nicely for the 2nd half of the year with Richard (38), Tim (38), Mike (36) and Steve (33) all in with a shout.

Details of an event in October and ticket sales for the GT will be up soon, thanks again to everybody who made it such an enjoyable (though very long) day.

Well what a full 21 hours yesterday was. Great day and great tournament. I took Necrons for their first outing of this year.
First round vs Alan and his Tyranids.
The game started poorly for me with us setting up against each other and after teleports Alan won the initiative and sent his Lictors after a Pylon destroying it without any loss. My spaceship floated into sight only to miss with one shot and hit for one point of damage on Alan’s Harridan. After this initial disappointment things started going my way with Alan failing five activations during his first turn. This allowed me to slowly deploy and catch several formations at the end of the first turn and start of the second cutting the Nids down. However, due to the lack of ability of the Necrons to march I was unable to push the game for a greater win than 2-0. Brilliant game thanks Alan.

Second round vs Noz and his Speed Freaks.
This was a bit of a frightening army to face with lots of Fighta-Boomas and a Landa. I was really concerned that I was going to be overwhelmed and lose my two Pylons early on giving the skies to the Orks. It can be simply said that my Pylons had a storming game throwing off hits and shooting Fighta-Boomas out of the sky for fun. This combined with a massive intermingled engagement at the start of turn two breaking Noz’s BTS, Big KoS and Dethkoptas followed by my C’tan, The Deceiver, shooting twice with disrupt to finish the BTS off. Again couldn’t push for the win in turn three, but was able to go for 4-0 in turn four. Great game thanks Noz.

Final round vs Steve and his Marines
Marines, well these should be easy… Never against Steve and we played a very cagey game trying to husband our forces and not lose activations. I was disappointed to not take down either of Steve’s Warhounds and he can be rightly annoyed that his initial teleport of terminators was repulsed by a Pylon, which survived the initial combat only to have Monolith support kill a terminator which helped win the combat. Living metal saved my Monoliths time and time again, whilst turn three turned on two sets of activations. Firstly a Pylon shot two Thunderhawks out of the sky, hit and critical followed by a hit and three points of damage….
Secondly in trying to take out a single Monolith Steve broke it allowing it to double forward into space. From this my infantry BTS charged out to engage Steve’s BTS infantry defending the Blitz. Dice went in my favour breaking the Marines and giving me a 2-0 win in the third turn. This game had very few casualties but was so tense and if I hadn’t won the last engagement I would have lost the game.

Thanks Steve for a great game, driving and running the tournament. Also thanks to Tripe Hex, pity you guys are closing we’ve had two great tournaments in the past two years.

once again, great event, well worth getting up at 4am to tackle the trip down (Much respect to Reedar, Jon and the other bristol-based guys who make the same effort multiple times a year!)

Game 1 - BrokenBaynet (Biel-Tan)

When Tim set up his army, with a single falcon formation, and no fire prisms or void spinners it felt like all my christmasses had come at once! he admitted to being quite rusty as his last tournament was a year ago, but with a pair of revenants stomping around and a formation of shining spears lurking in the webway I knew it wasn't going to be a pushover!

I chose to deploy the devs on the ground, and to teleport the terminators in (still getting to grips with the marine air-assault and perhaps being too cautious....) I was quite fortunate, winning the initiative every turn, and I set to work trying to knock out his AA and reduce his activations, I was very lucky with my dice and thanks to my land speeders blocking his gate, kept him from bringing anything out of the webway on turn 1. An air assault took out his jetbikes and a broken nightspinner nearby, although his revenants gunned down the survivors and put a few blast markers on my thunderhawk as it flew off. I elected to land the empty thawk next to his phoenix bombers and managed to shoot one down as they flew off. Turn 2 saw my terminators teleport in, fortunately getting no blast markers, I was able to double the land speeders into support range, prep and then engage one titan with the terminators, hiding from the second, I managed to damage it twice (although didn't knock the shield out) and took a single casualty in return, winning the combat and breaking the titans. Tim then engaged the terminators with the shining spears out of the gate, unfortunately, the dice were against him, and he only felled a single stand, losing 4 in return to the termies, and then before we could roll off, the support-firing landspeeders rolled 4 hits and gunned the rest of the formation down. Turn 3 was spent mopping stuff up, the devs finished off the second reaver and I managed to wipe all his other stuff on the table out, all that was left was for him to march a guardian formation out of the gate to contest an objective in my half, denying me TSNP and DTF, I attempted to break them for the chance at a 4-0 win on turn 3, but couldn't quite kill enough, and had to settle with 3-0 (T&H, BTS, Blitz)

Game 2 - MikeT (Thousand sons)

After game 1, I found myself on the top table against my 'primary coloured marine bro-pact' buddy Mike.... this was a bit of a bloodbath to be honest, I managed to break his defilers (and keep them broken throughout) but didn't capitalise on it with strong air assaults, ground pounding the devs and teleporting the terminators, I lost the initiative 2 turns in a row, including the crucual teleporting turn, the terminators were righteously butchered, and my thawk with assault marines was pretty ineffective (although the small amount of damage they did enabled me to nab a crossfire and wipe one retinue out) this was coupled with my warhound refusing to rally 2 turns in a row and hiding in the corner, as well as some quite shocking rally roles in turn 2 (needing 2's to rally, I rolled 3 1's in a row, leaving me at a huge disadvantage) Mike did go on to win the whole tournament, which says much less about his skill as a player, and more about how ridiculously broken the thousand sons are ;)

Game 3 - Reedar (orks)

Before this game, Steve had hinted that I may well end up facing Jon and his horrible Iyanden force, Richard kindly gave me a pep talk and some sage advice for dealing with Iyanden, I then found myself playing against Darren's fantastic ork army instead.....

This time I went all out air assault, with assaults and devs in one thawk, and terminators in the other, we had some tit-for-tat shooting, with me trying to kill his fast formations and reduce his activations, a timely air assault with the assaults and devs broke one of his zzap brigades and left that side of his force looking thin on the ground, however he had massed on the other side and swarmed quickly towards my blitz, blowing my land speeders up in the process.... I lost a warhound to his second zzap brigade by foolishly parking it 30 cm from them and generously allowing them to sustain fire on it!

He then bought on his landa to engage my air-assaulters, but thanks to CAP-ing planes bravely flying through and surviving a hail of flak, and the thunderhawk, I got a lucky crit on the landa which went down with all hands (phew) I then did a stupid move and engaged his big mob holding the blitz with the terminators.... this went as you would expect really, and ended with all the terminators very dead (even with Darren forgetting his overwatch shots!) in retrospect I should have gone after the supa stompa BTS as it had no TK weapon.... but such is life!

We went into turn 3 with Darren swarming towards my table edge, held by my BTS, he fired at them and the supreme commander decided to stick his head in the way of the first bullet.... :( losing my re-roll was crucial at this point as my thawk with assaults had 2 blast markers on it, they tried to engage Darren's zzap brigade but failed, he was then able to move his stompas to grab one of my objectives and in true orky fashion, marched his zzap brigade to contest my blitz, giving him a 2-0 victory, I'm not sure but I may have been able to engage his gunwagons and drag the stompas in, which would definitely have taken it to a 4th turn if I'd broken them!

Just like my last game against Darren it was a brutal bloodbath, and I had a smile on my face the whole time

I think only losing 2-0 meant that I came in 9th, just shy of the points, but walked away with the award for players choice Best painted, which I am super pleased with, and very grateful to everyone who voted for me, I'm very humbled as the overall standard of painting was amongst the highest I have seen at an event I've attended and I genuinely didn't expect to win! (although I'm glad I did :D)

I can't make britcon this year, but will hopefully make it to the cambridge skirmish, or failing that whatever happens with the replacement for Open War (maybe with some orks..... I've been inspired!)

Fantastic day all round. Many thanks to Steve and the Epic UK team for organising this. The Triple Helix guys were great hosts too and it's sad to see the Wargames hall close, but great to see that Triple Helix will still be going strong for the future.

Game 1 vs kyussinchains. Dustpan and brush was the analogy that I used on the day to describe Kyuss' method of mopping up the remains of my poor Biel-Tan. Lesson well and truly learnt after a year away. I started off by deploying badly and it went from bad to worse from there for the pointy ears who were utterly kicked, stomped and the remenants swept up. Fun game all round and cheers to K for being a great sport.

Game 2 vs Mark's Steel Legion. This game could have easily gone on for another two turns. Both of us had 11 activations each, so each turn took a long time to get through. Great skirmishes though and an epic battle took place between his Shadowswords, Rough Riders and large HQ force vs my Revenant Titans, Phoenix Bombers and Nightspinners.

Image

Game 3 vs Tom's Black Legion troops. This was a very serious game compared to the other two. In the end we ran out of time but Black Legion killed the most points so ran with a draw-with-a win.

Great to meet everyone on the day and the Blood Bowl tournament on the other side of the hall added to the good atmosphere,. Busy hall and busy day all round.

Overall a great day as always, and we had quite a large number of new players, which was also great to see!

As to how i fared...

Game 1: Jon (Iyanden)
It was a bit odd to be on the receiving end of the Iyanden for once, it does help when you know the army inside out and what it's strengths and weaknesses are though. As such, i castled up in a corner, with lots of overlapping AA cover (as Jon runs 3 vampires in the list) and then rolled up the board, using my long range firepower to steadily strip him of both AA and activations. Eventually i was able to get his BTS in a crossfire with my tank co and obliterated it, giving me a cheeky turn 3 3-0 win. Ironically Jon managed 2 criticals on my warhounds during the game, and i then returned the favour by critting a fully loaded vampire. I think i came out better from that one!

Game 2: Dave T (Ulthwe)
More Space Elves. This time, guardian flavour. A tough game as can be expected, Dave started with a brutal assault on my flank with his aircraft on turn 1, and while i did manage to strip a few activations off him, it wasn't enough to stop him having the activation advantage, and he set up a brutal assault for turn2. I was rather fortunate to win the initiative however, and instead turned it on it's head, smashing a wave serpent unit and killing the avatar, which took the wind out of his assault ambitions. However, Dave almost had me with a sneaky double whammy on my blitz, although the tank co was able to pull my ass out of the fire by breaking the only unit that was actually contesting. The Mech infantry also managed a daring assault on his BTS and small warwalker unit, which gave me his blitz and an objective for a 2-0 on turn 3.

Game 3: Mike T (Thousand Sons)
Things seemed to be going so well on turn 1, i'd broken some units, and chugged up the board. Then turn 2 the terminators came down, killed a warhound (with a cheeky crit no less), and then my supreme commander and tank co (intermingled) got assaulted by some 2K sons. I then had a brainfart and brought in the terminators, thinking they were going to be able to support fire anyway, forgetting that they could only shoot units that the main unit could shoot. I still only lost by 1, but when mike then rolled a 6 for resolution, that was me pretty much buggered. While the tank co did rally next turn, the impetus went wholly his way and while i managed to salvage a point there was just too many places i needed to be, and he pulled a 2-1 win in turn 3 against me. The changes to the 2k sons in the recent update have given them a real shot in the arm though i must say - a lot of points decreases and buffs have made them a formidable army at 3k, and definitely one to watch out for!

So, in the end managed a respectable 4th place, which could have been much worse!

Aye. Getting out of bed at 0800 and getting home at 1830 was a tough day! ;-)

Shall upload the pics later this eve hopefully.

I was also accosted by an excitable DT partway through game 3 who wanted me to take photographic evidence of the 4 sixes that he had rolled on only 4 (count 'em, 4!) dice
It has to be said that Noz, his opponent, didn't quite share in DTs joy...!
