E&C has mentioned the sandstone quality of this material and it would bug me if I had a bunch of minis made out of this stuff.

Shapeways is quite new to me the idea seems great but I'd only want stuff made from a decent material. Which materials give a good result? And what determines the choice of materials for a given product? (If its not going too far OT)

[Edit] just had a poke around shapeways - detail plastic looks like the obvious choice? I'm surprised that's not an option that grimdark offers.

I imagine each material has different tolerances so the sculpt might need to be adjusted to offer the other materials. I think some of the sculpts do offer frosted detail don't they?

I've talked to him and he's added FUD as a material option. That's nominally the stuff used for most masters. You cansee examples of it with the Angel Barracks threads.

If you're anything like me, you probably can't get enough FUD... >:D

Sorry everyone, but I had to post a (poor) joke to mark my 800th post!

Despite my snarking earlier, this has actually been very informative & useful in terms of the various material options at Shapeways and their properties. Really appreciate that insight without having to buy first!

Looks like you're getting your wish Jimmy! Metaphorically speaking, this guy on Shapeways is sodding GW with a rusty chainsaw! :D

It's a pity he's not better at sculpting (or really rushing it).

Yeah - they look sort of unfinished. They're more like tokens than miniatures - which is cool but a bit of a shame.

His BFG Pre Heresy Strike Cruiser is a nice design with pretty good detail (mine in frosted ultra detail arrived yesterday), so he is capable of good work he's just choosing to do loads of very poor quality designs which is a shame.

Perhaps he doesn't realise there's a market for quality epic sculpts or he's deliberately churning out dozens of poor ones to have less chance of IP problems? The cron ghost sculpt is laughably bad, if it wasn't for the title and context I wouldn't have recognised it as being meant to be an epic proxy.

I've noticed these guys, which I think are very, very good.

Image

But the dimensions confuse me. cm: 4.598 w x 0.562 d x 1.904 h

Are these guys really only 2 cm tall? That can't be right. (Totally unuseable, if true.)

They're 6mm scale and that'd be 2cm including the banners and base sprue. They may be Evil and Chaos's designs?

I reckon he's designing them for a specific material, in this case white strong and flexible, so sees no point in putting more detail which won't print acceptably..... I'm tempted by the drop pods, but can't justify spending anything else for a while, let's hope a C&D isn't forthcoming any time soon, so I can save up some money! a strike cruiser and battle barge would really tie my imperial fists together....

Those are some of mine I did for Exodus Wars / SCP. They seem to have ended up on their Shapeways store. Standard 6mm sized human troops wearing heavy robes / medium armour.
