With Into the Breech this weekend it's been nice not having to rush out a load of painting at the last minute.

Instead I painted up these guys to act as a more suitable Warlord unit...

Looking good Daz!

Keep with the ruins; maybe just a drybrish instead of highlights and it'll blend into the base as 'scenery' as opposed to looking like it might be another model.
That said though I always find it suprising how well something that I thought looked silly at first turns out as solid work when reproduced in multiples/

Cheers dude.

I'm gonna have another stab at the ruins like this; although may tone down the final edge highlight a touch. I generally find stark contrasts work well at this scale, but maybe this attempt was too much...

Cool idea! I like the way these guys are coming out. The gobsmashas are smashing awesome :D

Cheers mate. I'm slowly but surely trying to phase out all the models that were painted when I was about 15 and looks like I used crayola crayons whilst blindfolded in a dark room.
Vehicles are mostly done. Only stumbling block is that I don't really enjoy painting infantry.....!

I think the technique is fine but I'd shift the colors more into the grey. When you edge like that on black (or almost black) it makes the surface appear glossy and reflective when our brains process it.

Here's basically the results doing the same thing=>

So you're saying do a grey basecoat, and highlight from there, rather than start from black?

Close. Base black. Apply Adeptus Battlegrey or Charadon Granite (depending how dark you want it) on the flate surface of the bricks leaving the black in the recesses. Lightly drybrush codex grey or uniform grey from the top down (i prefer with an angle). Edge with some of the same. Lighten the paint with white if required for more contrast.

Hm. My attempt above was close; black undercoat, a 50:50 mix of chaos black and adeptus battle grey as a layer, then astronomican grey as the edge highlight.

I'd like to try it with an adeptus battle grey highlight in place of the astronomican one, but seem to have mislaid my ABG pot...

Managed to finish off another stand of nobz. Not great by any means, but good enough to use on the table...

I think they're grand.

Cheers JZ, I'd like to spend some more time on them, but it's not really an option at the mo; Real Life(tm) and all that.
Being only able to paint by normal room lighting makes doing some of the fine detailing awkward - I need to invest in a decent lamp...

Cheers

Next tester stand of Ork boyz complete.
Only difference here is that the ruin section has been worked up from grey, as opposed to black.

Here's the two stands next to each other. I'm much happier with the 'grey' version.
What do you guys think?

These are brilliant - especially those nobz. Makes me want to start collecting Orks!
