So I have been wanting to do 3D model design for years now, I finally decided to get in the kitty side of the pool and try it out. By that I mean I downloaded Blender; if its something I enjoy I will upgrade to Rhino someday. So can anyone share experiences with Blender, or point me to a good 3D support site, and lastly I would love some general advice on 3D design(this kind you wish you had when you started out). Thank you so much, I have been nervous about starting this for fear of failure, but its a new year and I am trying to redefine myself this year so.... here it goes!

I couldn't get on with blender...... There are better programs out there, moment of inspiration has a 30 day free trial and is fantastic, autodesk123D is free and reasonable..... There are a *lot* of threads on shapeways tech forum about blender and it seems to be considered one of the more problematic programs......

If you love it, great, if not don't be discouraged!

Haven't even tried it yet, Im a little gun shy about trying a program with a trial because I wont have the funds in 30 days to buy it outright. I need to prove to myself I can master this before I fork over a ton of cash. So Blender is a no go huh?

I'm no expert, just sharing my experiences..... You may love blender, but if you don't, don't think it's you, it's probaboy blender...... many start with sketchup, I did and it's good to learn, easy and intuitive, but can be a real 'mare to get designs into printable format

I have very very basic knowledge wit sketch-up, I used it for gallery layouts in undergrad. I will try Blender and 123D. Thanks! :)

you can also download a trial version of moment of inspiration which has no time limit, but no save function either, great to learn the program and get a feel for it, then you can download the trial version if you want to actually make something.... when you make your millions from your awesome 3D design, you can then buy the full version of MoI to make yet more world-beating designs :)

I have to second Moment of Inspiration - it's what I use(d). I went from zero to hero pretty quickly too, as it is pretty easy to pick up fast. Also, you can get a student discount, bringing the price down (you were in education, right?)
