Decided it was time to put together a second army for epic, marines are all well and good but I'm terrible with them so I figured it was time for an army with a more straight forward approach to victory. Roll on the imperial guard, part decided with the help of Dave B swinging my decision in favour of guard by offering up some chimeras el cheapo!

My target is to have them ready for FSA in February but I suspect, with work and real life constantly getting in the way, that I won't hit this target. I've only started making some tentative steps the past few days and figured it would be a good idea to keep a project log running so I can keep everything all in one place and remind myself how much work I've already done.. so without further ado, nothing major here, just some basing lark!...

For starters, I knew I wanted to base the tanks - easiest option was to go with FoW bases as I had a stack of them available. The only problem with that is the shadowswords. The FoW large bases are way too big, the mediums way too small for my tastes... drastic action was needed:

Image

base choppage! two mediums split lengthways to give me a bit of space either side of the shadowswords (the bases come to 4cm x 5cm after splitting and shuffling about) I'll post pics of the finished base once I get a chance to finish it up. Applied green stuff to the gap today, waiting for that to cure so I can sand it down a bit and tidy it up.

Secondly, I've never been fond of those horrible clear plastic flying bases and I've been itching to do some funky basing with epic scale minis... so these are the bases for my vultures:

I'm going to add a few little details once the glue on the sand has settled down and cured. The material is wood chippings mercilessly stolen from the local park.

Next up, hopefully going to actually get started undercoated and painting.

Thanks! :) I skipped adding any more detail to them, was planning on popping a DRM scout mini or two amongst the rocks but the scale difference is just too much to handle and looked completely wrong, I'll settle for the rocky formations with some snow and/or the dead grass look!

Ok, teeny tiny little update.. it's taken me this long to get anything else done, but I've been snatching 10 minutes here and there to start basing some of the tanks.

First up is seven chimeras and a shadowsword, super glued to their bases one night.. sand glued down the next.. and then a sealing coat of thinned down pva applied just now. At this rate, the army will be ready for next December:

and a sneaky little set of bases to be used as testers... I hail from the land of 'bugger, what paints did I use for that again?' - thanks to the incredibly slow rate at which I paint, it's inevitable that I'll forget just what colours I use for an army.. and because I'm a mug for consistency it's important for me to settle on a base scheme (or even paint scheme) that's either a.) easy to remember or b.) scribbled down somewhere. These testers will be used purely for picking a decent basing colour for the whole army. At the moment I'm leaning towards brown / desert colours and will contrast with either black and grey camo on the tanks or a bone white colour. or snow camo. or I just don't know.. oh god don't make me make a decision on army colours just yet :(

(bonus 40k project lingering in the background gathering dust in the background ;))

Next up, honest to god I'll hopefully get something undercoated in the next week or two.

As someone who has just finished painting an "old-school" Imperial Guard army, I will be following this thread with interest! It'll be nice to see how someone else tackles this force!

I'd seen your thread, love some of those OOP guard tanks :D they bring back memories of poring over copies of WD back in the day, salivating at the prospect of having that many tanks to play with!

'fraid not! I'd picked up the FoW bases at the start of the year for a failed Chaos project that never really got off the ground and figured they'd make pretty sweet stand ins for tank bases, I saw one of the flame on chaps' ulani tank regiment based up similar and that sealed the deal for me :) The infantry will likely still be on the GW strip bases because I love those bases for infantry!

A teeny tiny update from tonight, in the same photo... I've started another base for the shadowsword, it wasn't until I'd based up the s/sword that I noticed I'd annoyingly put it ever so slightly off center. Enough to bug the crap out of me... so s/sword is in the freezer to weaken the superglue, he'll be pulled off the base and slapped on the new one in the next day or two and I'll make a point of not rushing it!

Secondly, bothered to assemble the vultures and get them on their bases... most fiddly little wings ever. I can foresee those little gits breaking off frequently which is a shame :(

Image

I also undercoated my test bases, but you really don't need a photo of that ;)

Slow few weeks, had a slight distraction with the big game coming up this weekend... after discovering I'd misplaced two stands of assault marines, I had to set about replacing them. Hrmpf. I figured at the same time, I'd throw together another tactical detachment just because.

I'm only blathering on about marines in an imperial guard thread because this year marks 20 years since I got 2nd ed space marine for Christmas and the mk6 tactical marines I used on the stands are from that very same set I opened up on Christmas day twenty years back, they're the last remaining models I have from back then. Well it made me feel all warm and fuzzy anyway :)

Here they are, a little bit WIP but on track to be ready for Sunday..

Image

..and here's a pic of that hacked apart pair of FoW bases to keep this post vaguely on track with the topic of the thread :)

I'll get back on track in the new year with any luck.

Nice Blood Angels! Old School FTW!
Let me guess, a base coat of Blood Red over white primer followed by Badab Black?

Almost :) white undercoat, P3 Skorne red basecoat, Devlan mud slapped all over, drybrushed with P3 Khador base! Then from there, anything else is just details!
