Exactly. They just look really really friendly*, fun to hang out with, excitable, I imagine them talking like Tachikomas.

* except for the big guns I guess.

I can see them talking like that before mowing some chump down :)

Does it help to remove the vents?

I liked how the vents mimicked the Ashigaru's hats - course, I don't know if this will matter much at actual size.

I prefer your first version with the vents. Feels like the last one is missing something like it's unfinished.

I do as well -

I'm thinking the attack drones will come 5 per sprue, then there will be a "support drone" sprue, consisting of 2 shield drones, 2 support drones, and a Ashigaru controller. Thoughts?

Everything you do is brilliant, however... What's the status of the hybridified abominations and stuff? My selfish Christmas budget must be spent before the new year!

Maybe try flipping the eye upside down and keeping the vents? Given the assumed size that sort of undercut should be acceptable, no?

Either way you've definitely got my interest.

Nitpick - The Hybrids are all ready for the bronze printer for wave 2 - ALL the hybrids. But the first wave is taking quite a bit longer than I thought. The guy told me wave 1 would be ready by the end of the week, and then I'll send him wave 2. It takes him 2-3 weeks to get 6 sprues printed in bronze. I don't know how long it will take to get the metal casts - but the test models didn't take too long, so I have high hopes that wave 1 will be ready before the holidays, with wave two by the end of January.

Here's the process I'm dealing with (and why everything is taking so dang long):

Concept Art (1-5 days) > 3D Model (2-7 days) > Posing (1-2 days) > STL checks and edits (1-2 days) > Shapeways test print (optional - 2 weeks) > Bronze Print (2-3 weeks) > Metal casts (1-2 weeks roughly)

It's been a learning process - but what I'm discovering is that a wave of 6 models or sprues takes about 5-7 weeks to get from start to finish! So in the meantime, I'll just keep on modeling for future releases. But I'm super excited that the end product will be very nice, and worth the wait.

Spectrar Ghost - I'll try some different shapes and see what kind of results I get. Everything is looking like mouths and eyes now! :{[]

I apologise for being unhelpful :D i agree it looked better with the vents rather than without as well, over-exuberant if you keep 'em, too dull if you lose 'em.

I'm assming the piece of the drone attached to the base is actually a piece of the model? I feel like it needs to be raised a little with a seperate round piece between the drone and base to differentiate the model from the base. I mean it is supposed to be flying/hovering yes?

Thanks for the informative feedback! Interesting to get a process breakdown like that. I suppose the worst thing that can happen is that I'll have to wait until January then.

Got some work done on the drone controller - shown here with a support drone:

Image

Went for a "VR" like helmet display, with a large backpack control unit, with arm mounted controllers - like some massive video game console :)

Blindhorizon - I considered mounting them on simple pegs, but decided to make the "peg" a part of the model - in the drone's case, a fin. Seeing as how these things hover a few inches off the ground, I think it looks OK at this scale - what do you all think?

I think it's a really clever way to get t he hover effect.
