A grass covering is glued to the top of the base and then cut to size. The armadillo sits on top. This is how troops can access the top level of the installation (as well as by the staircase).
The fortress building, entrenchments for vehicles, and bunkers for infantry are placed on the model.

The finished article. Other than a few hills, I hadn't had any real experience in building stuff from stratch. I'm pleasantly surprised with the result.

A big tip of the hat goes to the chap in the Glasgow Games Workshop who recommended using the rinse paint (or whatever it's called!), it really made a big difference to the end result.

Cheers Legion, glad you thought my work wasn't too sloppy! You're completely right of course, in any normal game you'd ignore the strongpoint, but my intention is to use the strongpoint only in attack/defend scenarios where it can't be by-passed (ie all objectives will be in and around the strongpoint).
I'll be writing up a battle report shortly from yesterday where I used the stronpoint. The objective of that game was for the attacker to capture within 4 turns the stronghold which is sat upon the strongpoint! Hope you find it of interest!

Very good use of basic building materials, and a very nice end result! I like the worn-stairs-effect.

Cheers Fredmans, your comments are very encouraging! And to return the compliment, I have to say that I am a big fan of your "Epic Endeavours". The standard of paintwork is utterly incredible. Every time I have a nosey at your breathtaking armies I just think "I wish I could do that", or maybe "if he's ever in Scotland, I hope he stops by to paint my armies..."!
