I am going to start making my first proper colony for my game setting using my own buildings.
I will, as is my want base them on steel tiles.
Apart from the fact it clearly defines the BUA it will allow me to make some permanent track/paved features.

Given the premise that the OKI Modular Habitation Units (MHUs) are prefabs and dropped into place it makes sense to me that the same will be done with a walking area.
I will stick on the tiles between the MHUs some very slightly raised paths.
There is a small town centre which will have various optional bits to go in there as the mood takes me.

I am also working on some OKI perimeter walls which will be available in a month or two as will some solar towers and wind towers.

But I am not sure if I like the set up.
I am torn, as I want to create a decent sized town with a few buildings but I am not sure they should be this close?
I guess running utilities would be cheaper with the MHUs closer and the perimeter walls will be shorter and thus cheaper.
I guess when on an alien planet being closer feels safer.
I think that justifies not making the most of the space a new colony world has to offer, what do you think?

Take a look at Google Earth for small outpost settlements or year round scientific facilities. They are invariably constructed in very tight clusters, both for econimic and protective reasons. The settlement looks great - I do need to order some of those from you soonish.

I predict Michael will make an awesome looking outpost/settlement...and then play only one game with it. ;)

What would be a neat detail might be to take some brass rod and thread and string power lines between adjacent buildings - as prefab it is quite likely that the inital utilities would be aboveground.

I'd add some crates, barrels, coiled wire/tubes/pipes, random "tech bitz". Someone here built a settlement once out of old keys from a keyboard. Might be a nice place to snag some inspiration from.

looks like a great start though!

Well sweet then! You've got all the inspiration you needed then, eh? :P
Yeah that thing was a work of art, I may say.

you know I actually carried home an old keyboard from a skip, with a vauge voice in my head muttering 'they keys will be handy' - took me till this morning to realise where that came from!
