I'd almost rather update it to the be a "Space Marine Thunderbolt" that just happens to have identical stats to the Storm Talon. That'd avoid the issue completely (and wouldn't be too unfluffy - Thunderbolts used to be a Marine thing).

that's niether one thng or the other.

just have both - stormtalons and imperial navy. keep the stormtalons out of the codex list for now, it's not like there's a pressing need for them.

as for the mentor's and their toybox - i'd love to see that, but 6th edition 40k is due in a few weeks so a new marine codex (with other new toys) might well be incoming within a month or so.

That's just a matter of opinion, I've come to quite like the model myself. And actually we want both to free SMs from relying on allied air:

* Storm Talon makes an excellent Thunderbolt counts as.

* Storm Eagle (assuming to be used for air support purely and no transporting in this mission) makes a pretty decent Marauder counts as.

This sounds awesome to me.

I would rather have units with proper stats as yet another "count as".

I posted some stats for the Storm Eagle a while ago:

I would think that, like the Caestus Assault Ram and the Storm Raven, the best way to represent the Storm Eagle would be as an AV Skimmer that has the planetfall ability.

The Storm Talon on the other hand is clearly a real fighter.

If the Storm Eagle makes the jump to flyer, I think including it as a bomber (or even fighter-bomber - I think it does have VTOL capability) might not be unreasonable.

I also think the best method for fitting either it or the Storm Talon into existing lists is to create a semi-generic statline that clearly encompasses the new models and the old, thus avoiding too much confusion on the part of new players.

I remember using my 40k resin Valkyrie as a "real" flyer back in 4th edition.

Strongly against generic statlines. If you're going to go generic you might as well not do it at all.
