I need a new camera to finally get an army up on this forum. been recommended a Pentax optio RZ18,
which has x16 optical zoom and Super Macro mode. its around £120 and a friend says its ok-ish for detailed pics.

budget £250 max or £350 if camcorder with 1080P and HD...

any advice for me or others in a similar position appreciated

With a tripod (or even resting the camera) and sufficient lighting most macro-capable cameras should be ok.

Indeed I took these images of an Adler 6mm with my old crummy camera whilst resting it on a book.

Could try asking a dedicated camera forum and reading up some online revews? I found http://www.dpreview.com to be helpful last time I bought a camera and people on the forums there know a lot about photography.

I have no knowledge of current cameras myself as it's been several years since I bought a camera (I'm just waiting for the 41MP Nokia 808 cameraphone to be released soon).

Go to a camera store with some sample figures and test out some models.

Anything with a decent optical zoom and a macro feature will work. I've taken some nice pictures with a pretty cheap digital camera.

A good tripod is important as well as a camera that allows you to set a colour balance

I have a Canon SX 230 HS (IXUS in other countries, I think), and it does not have Super Macro mode. The Canon SX 200 IS did (I have that one too, but I scratched the lens crawling through dusty earthquake damage). For 6mm infantry, Super Macro mode is worth looking for. This line of cameras is meant for the outdoors though - big zoom, poor low light performance. The Canon SX95 is one of the best low-light compacts, and unlike the 200 line, it's actually compact.

All of Canon's SX cameras have manual controls, which I find indespensible for this sort of thing. You can get by without them if you have good neutral backgrounds and great lighting, I suppose. Plan on spending money on lighting and ways to diffuse it. A tripod, too. If you get a compact camera, there are really cheap plastic tripods (US$20) which are fine for this application.

What else will you use the camera for?

Buy a cheap camera and spend £100 on a top notch daylight lamp. These days anythign with an optical zoom and a macro will take a good photo, but not all lighting will let the camera do its job on targets this small.

A good daylight lamp will help you light your photos to get the best out of your camera, but will also help your painting so you've got nicer objects to photograph ;)
