So after all the hammering, sawing and drilling- what the heck has been going on in Tas's garage?

Catapult construction! :p
Well an Onager to be exact, but a small scale seige engine nonetheless to throw dead animals over the fence before I send in the kids to carry the house next door.

Actually, I had to build 2. ?The first one I had seriously underestimated how much power was in one of these things and it collapsed badly (without injury)

The next one is vastly stronger and well over-engineered probably. ?All is need now is a trigger and sling and I'll be ready to do some hurling!

This beast is 2.5ft long by 1 ft wide, made from 2 x 4 and uses harded steel bolts to take the significant strain of the torsion skein (shown unwound here).

Enginseers be jealous!  :L

No...not at all actually.

I became rather taken with the rebuilt versions at various castles around Europe during my travels there in the last few years and thought why not build one myself?

I have never been a particularly handy workshop type of guy and this was about at my limit of craft skills (with woodworking tools that is).  It took a good two days of labour (and many trips to the hardware store to get more stuff!)  but I feel rather happy with the result- can't wait to get it finished!

Including the one at Loch Ness?
It looks solid enough - any thoughts for the sling material? Oh, and mind your face when you fire the contraption - I've an idea the sling can behave a bit erratically. :o

We await pictures and movies of the thing in full action shortly, as well as an idea of how far it can hurl!

Great work. I always wanted to have a go at a Trebuchet, but I doubt that I ever will.

Oh, and Tas, be careful - there's this guy in the states with something on weapons of mass destruction - don't want him invading you after seeing your pics, with just one year remaining to complete my online course based there! He might even try to shut down Epicomms!  :oo  :(

Are you going to go upscale next?  Build one that can fling Volkswagons like the ones I've seen on the Discovery channel?   :p

Wow !!!  :o  Although I would have preferred a Holodeck, that is pretty impressive, Tas !!!  Very cool !  I'm envious of those of you who have been to Europe and seen all the castles, ruins, etc.  However, I did see some when I was deployed to (then) West Germany, while in the Army. I would love to see more.  And don't worry about that WMD stuff, you can always hide it in Syria or Lebanon !    And I don't think Trebuchet are considered WMD !   But Really, a great job and quite imaginative !  You never cease to amaze me ! :;):  Happy Trebucheting Down Under !

Thnaks for the kind words gentlmen- I am rather proud of my mad creation!  I used up a lot of domestic brownie points to be in the garage lots this week !

What I need now is to have it conscecrated by the Tech-Priest adepts and blessed with holy oils....

>Including the one at Loch Ness?

Indeed that one at Urquart Castle is a beauty, though there are many examples around (like at Caerphilly and Dover).

The Trebuchet at Urquart Castle (usually) uses a counterweight to hurl its payload and is designed to fling large objects medium distances.

This one is a torsion catapult (called an Onager by the Romans) which is optimised for medium payloads over longer distances with more accuracy.

>I'm envious of those of you who have been to Europe and seen all the castles, ruins, etc.  However, I did see some when I was deployed to (then) West Germany, while in the Army

L4- my wife informs me that I dragged her and the kids to 47 different castles in the 2 years we lived there.  Then there were a few she wasnt there for!  Some of those castles in Bavaria are stunning though.  The best IMHO are the castles of Edward I in Northern Wales.  They are unbelieveable!

I am doing a short Adult education course on Medieval castle construction, which got me to thinking on building seige-engines

>We await pictures and movies of the thing in full action shortly, as well as an idea of how far it can hurl!

Indeed Sir- it shall be so!

>....and then, a Titan.

LMAO!

Those guys ARE crazy!

There is a comp each year (inevitably in the USA) called "Punkin Chunkin" where people build full size seige engines of all types and have to hurl 8lb mpumkins accross a field.

The record holder has an impressive official distance of 4434.28 feet!

You can see the madness here:

http://www.punkinchunkin.com/

If they had one in Oz, I just know I'd have to be in it! :D

Hi!

What are you going to use it for.....?

I'd suggest speaking with the leaders of GWAUS and warning them that if epic A is sold and supported in OZ you'll mount them on it and catapult them into oblivion.... :;):
