Right so it looks like I've finnished my design for this first model (generic still to come). All that's left now is what I'm sure will be endless amounts of tweaking to make it compatable with shapeways. I'm sure I could use some pointers from anybody who's gone through this process before.

So here's my final few pics, next up will be a comms dish / carapace landing pad proxy and possibly a correctly scaled crane/forklift with some extra shells.

Why not more weapons ?

Looks like a super heavy armoured tank to me.

I agree, I didn't set out intending to build a minoris, it just happened that I thought this tank would make a suitable proxy for an indirect fire quake cannon if i enlarged it a bit. I guess that's one of the reasons why I'm less keen to develop this into a fully modular design as it doesn't really fit my vision of what a minoris should look like, the other reason being money. It's scary how quickly the cm3 and the associated cost build up, I'm not even sure that I can afford to print more than one of these and definitely couldn't afford anything else beyond that. If I can get it printed and people are interested i'd be happy to share my designs as I've already said (assuming there's no illegality in doing so).

Of course i may revise my whole opinion if I can hold a physical version of it.

Right so I took the plunge and ordered a copy through shapeways, and it arrived today!

It's a very cool feeling holding the end result in your hands, and the fact that I drew this on a computer and now it's here in reality just puts it on a whole other geeky level for me. I suspect that I might be looking on it with a parents eyes as although I know there are some obvious problems I'm still chuffed to bits with it, especially as it's my first model.

I've taken some pics but as the model is so translucent it's pretty difficult, I tried to wash it with some badab black to bring out some definition but that didn't work so well either.

And a shot with all the plug in bits removed

There's probably a few other angles here if anybodies interested

If I was to do it again I'd definitely use bigger rivets as mine were too small (0.2mm diameter, 0.1mm high) and I can only just see them, review the thickness of the stabilisers and probably try and make the whole thing a little less square looking.

Also I'd follow this advice I found in one of Stingray's old threads, particualy about building at a far bigger scale and minimising at the end.

Stuff thats good to know;

Its important to work in sketchup at way above mm scale (i go for 1000x the end size). Sketchup has a bunch of weird bugs the make stuff vanish if you work at scales under 1mm. Scale down only at very end.
Watertightness of models (also known as being closed or manifold) is crucial. I found the following 2 sketchup plugins useful for this;

Solid Inspector: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=30504
CADspan (free version): http://www.cadspan.com/tools
Its probably best to merge all your separate geometry into a single mesh when you export (using 'Outer Shell' or 'Union') but I found this to be incredibly tedious and mostly unnecessary. I saved merging for cases where the preview of the uploaded model looked screwy.

These are the rough steps i follow to get finished model printed;

Check watertightness (probably best to check this regularly during model creation)
Explode all groups and components - more bugs cause the exported models scale to be completely wrong unless its exploded completely before export
Scale down to correct size
Probably want to verify watertightness again
Export in Collada file format (you can also compress it in a zip file for a faster upload)
Upload to shapeways and make sure the 'fix problems'(called something like that) check box is checked. If post upload fixing fails, do some merging/tweaking and try again
Once uploaded go into your 'my designs' area and inspect the uploaded & fixed model with the in browser 3d model viewer. if you see anything screwy then correct/tweak your geometry on your sketchup model, export and upload again
And finally when it all looks good submit for print! (and find something else to keep you busy for several weeks while you wait for it to arrive)

Hope that helps.

It'd be great to hear your thoughts, what you like and what I could do better?

I like it- hopefully you/others can do more plugs and that would solve the Minorus issue for those of us who are inept at scratchbuilding/converting. It fits perfectly with the Imperial design look, which is understandable given the starting point of a Malcador.

Great stuff

Cheers

James

Very nice! Not sure how the Shapeways process works as far as the rationale and costs for items being offered for sale by the creator (some items are and some are not) but I would happily buy four of those...

That turned out pretty sharp, exagerating certain details is always a good thing in a minature. Overall a really nice job.

Very nice, turned out well, how much does it cost to have a model of this size printed from shapeways anyway?

Far more than I was hoping unfortunately, it's 36 Euro's before VAt and shipping and if it wasn't for the fact that I put in the hours designing it then I definitely wouldn't have bothered. I'd love to order more but I just can't justify the cost. Even skooping out the underside of the hull didn't do much, I think it shaved ~ 3 Euro's off the price but risked making the model more fragile. It's 9.93 cubic cm apparently, I don't know how shapeways works, I assumed it was just based on the volume of components but looking at other peoples designs they seem to cram components as close together as possible so I may have overspent if shapeways simply charges by the overall volume covered by components.

I'm not really sure we can discuss such a thing as this will be GW/FW IP wont it as I borrowed heavily from their concept sketch? If however we were discussing another similar model of my own design then I think I'd have to say that unfortunately I don't have the skill, knowledge or means to reproduce these models. I was hoping that shapeways would come in cheap enough but sadly that isn't so. If there was somebody out there with a means of replicating my designs on a production scale and was interested then I'd likely be more than happy to hand them over.

Whilst I'm going to use this model to proxy a minoris I don't really think it properly represents what one is (at least to my mind). By following an existing concept so closely it let me get to grips with the software but I reckon I could do something more appropriate now and as it wouldn't be based on any existing FW/GW material then I reckon there's a fair bet we could talk about production. However I rather suspect it might require somebody taking me under their wing and showing me the ropes if I ever get to that stage. I'm definitely interested in having a crack at it sometime, just need to wait for inspiration to strike.
