I am not much of a painter. (I am not much of a gamer right now either! :wah ) But, every now and again I want to pick up a brush and actually paint something interesting or fun to paint. Painting a 6mm army is a certain kind of achievement and fun of it's own, but I wonder about single miniatures that people could recommend. Usually when I want to paint something for pleasure, it ends up being a 40K mini, which is fine. I just want something that is interesting to paint, will let me have some fun with colours/schemes and is currently available to buy. It doesn't have to be Epic, or even 6mm, but.... any suggestions? I am looking at the Eldar Phantom, Tau Barracuda, etc.

I painted a couple of Eldar Revenants recently; That was quite enjoyable, as they are one of the few Epic models that have dynamic poses. The arms and head can be positioned for effect too.

They are a bit of a pain to assemble, though.

Outside of 6mm GW have released some fantasy minis recently that i wouldn't mind a stab at as one offs, like the new weight king:

I do like the Revenants, but I think that I generally prefer the Phantom. It just looks perfect and is one of the oldest GW Epic minis still in production (?). I wonder if there are any cheap Phantoms on eBay.....

Thanks. Keep the suggestions coming.

Well heavily dependant on taste, isn't it?

The short answer is: Shop around. Look at sites like coolminiornot, or one of the excellent painter blogs out there; find inspiration, and make some grey boring metal beautiful!

Here's a couple very different suggestions: Ángel Giráldez' blog and Dave King's blog

I paint a lot, and mostly for the pure undiluted pleasure of making grey plastic or metal come alive.
One of the greates satisfactions in painting lately was walking past a beautiful girl one day on the way home from work, finding a mini that was dressed like her, and copying her look.

I believe it's now actually the oldest *GW* model still in production.

They have to justify the price, the new plastics are actually solid gold coated in plastic, for that reassuring heaviness in the hand.

That may be the best definition of a wargamer geek that I have ever heard! ;D No offence.

I entirely agree. Not only is it heavily dependant on taste, but also my current mood, which is one reason why I am monumentally bad at actually finishing anything. I also find it really difficult to paint anything for fun. I am a very slow (and bad) painter, and I do feel that time spent painting something that isn't going to be used in an army is a 'waste', as I am primarily a gamer. But, of course, that makes it more difficult to enjoy and finish anything.

Right now, I am leaning towards the Eldar Phantom, the Tau Barracudas, and the FW Warhounds for Epic. Since the Phantom is probably the lowest on the list (and most expensive!) I think that a small FW order is on the cards!
