Hi all,
Ive been twisting my mind this way and that over a selection problem of the current flyers for Epic. On the one had there is the fantastic FW flyers (especially the Thunderbolt and Eldar Vampire models) love to get them but rumour has it they are 'true-scale' 6mm and dont fit with GW model range. Ive got a few GW flyers and dont want them looking like 'mini-me's on the table!!

Furthermore, how does say the FW Thunderbolts compare to the old GW Warlord titans? (I mean the plastic 'beetleback' ones) Do they make a mockery of the description 'TITAN'????

Fliers have notorious scale issues. But then, so does all of Epic.

Models aren't meant to be in exact scale with each other. All infantry are roughly the same size as each other; all vehicles are roughly the same size as each other; all War Engines are roughly the same size as each other; all planes are roughly the same size as each other. The size of the pieces aren't intended to show how big the models are in relation to each other - just that vehicles are bigger than infantry, and War Engines are bigger than vehicles.

Forge World Thunderbolts are ginomrous compared to a Warlord - seems the best way of taking out a Titan would be landing a Thunderbolt on it. You can mitigate that by buying a fan-made Titan scaled the same as the Thunderbolts. (Actually, are there any tru-scaled Warlord proxies?)

EW has the Behemoth, it's not out yet though.

Thanks Curis, yes a huge looking thunderbolt belly flopping on my titchy warlord is an interesting strategy...

Hmm, its a shame but FW do 40k scale Titans... only kidding. ;-)

YEp ... SM2 Flyers are smallest ... then the E40K are a little bigger and The F/W AI aircraft are bigger and actual "true scale" ... as the pic shows ... ;D

None that I've heard. Supposedly things had to be changed, not sure how much it looks like the original 3d model now.

I like to think of the FW aircraft as being scaled relative to perspective. Your view of the battle field is usually from a scale distance of about 1000 ft (roughly 3 real feet above the table for tall guys like me). If you put the planes (performing a low altitude ground attack run) at a point somewhere between the ground and your frame of reference then the scale works. They're closer to you than the troops on the ground and so should appear bigger.

Or if that doesn't work for you just console yourself in the fact that the FW planes are 1000 times nicer than the SG equivalents.

Really, It's a question of taste and how far your suspension of disbelief will stretch. Mine goes pretty far, but I will be buying the FW models for my fliers, so that they keep making them...

OT: So would the MkII Thunderhawk be a good base to convert up some Storm Ravens? It sure looks like it from those pictures.

Are Storm Ravens going to make it into the Codex list at some point?

there's also the simple fact that jet planes are BIG.

A typical modern fighter plane is almost as long as an airbus.

Scale gives you a headache as soon as you start thinking about it. Like Transformers toys.

Heh, what was the name of the big Decepticon that was a Space Shuttle? In one scene all the Decepticons are inside it, and in the next he's standing next to them and not much bigger then them.

You want scale issues... go watch in the night garden. I have absolutely no clue what's going on with that one.

To keep it vaguely relevant, I much prefer my fliers to be the smaller older models but at the end of the day, everything in epic is an abstraction anyway - doubly so with fliers since their only interaction with troops on the tabletop is to shoot at / get shot down by the enemy.

And I thought US kids shows had issues! I just skimmed through the first page of that thread, and I have to say Yo Gabba Gabba! sounds positively not the imaginings of someone on bad acid by comparison.

I prefer the FW fliers for their more accurate scale and greater detail, but like many parts of the game it's all down to taste.
