congrats to Simon, Jon and Dave - Especially Si and Jon: 1)for your best results yet and 2) for taking completely mental lists! - how many Forts, how many Fightas? Barking mad!

I think it's quite clear the Speed Freaks are totally overpowered and should be considerably nerfed.

Congrats also to Darren I think for 4th - Come on Da Boyz!

And when playing nids that many Fighta Bomberz is a real problem!

Didn't help that my Revenants came out to play and only scored one hit on his BTS. It all continued to go wrong after that.

So this weekend saw the first run out of my fully painted nid force (Tales of Epic gamers for photos!)

This page shows my list, and the lists I played against - http://www.epic-uk.co.uk/ukepicachampio ... =46&aid=24

Game One - Jon and his flying circus!
Oh boy..... 5 AC formations! This was the list I really didn't want to face so getting it game one was less than ideal. With no real threat Jon uses his planes well and harried the nid formations, killing one of the Harridans early on. That said I was in the game right up to the point that my Dominatrix died to a Crit followed by another 6 killing it outright. I still managed to hang on in and had a chance to make the game 3-2 but a foolish move at the end resulted in it being a 3-1 win for Jon. Fun game if I did feel a little helpless against so many fliers.

Game Two - Ryan and his bunkers.
So Siegers, the number 2 list I didn't want to face :) All those dug in troops were always going to be hard to shift and being blunt I was playing for a draw unless an opportunity to break into the lines appeared. Fortunately such a break did appear and at the end of turn 4 Ryan had one activation to try and save the game by ordering his last activation to march back to contest the blitz, which his AA unit did. After 4 turns of being shelled shot and assaulting the nid's came out much worse on the countback so a winning draw to Ryan. Let the debate as to the usefulness of razor wire v nids continue :)

Game Three - Chris and the Flying Circus MkII
Vanaheim, my that's a lot of skimmers! This was a game that could have gone badly but I think Chris moved forward a bit too aggressively on turn one and allowed the nids to swarm in and smash formations at will in turn 2 and 3. A very bloody game that saw the nids edge it 2-0 in 3 turns.

Game Four - Mark P and the Steel legion
Mark has been scared by playtesting against nids I think, and has a bit of a mental block against them. The game was going well as I broke or destroyed all the smaller formations and harried the larger ones. I wasn't able to push for the win on turn 3 and a mistake on turn 4 when my dom shot at his Reg HQ contesting my blitz rather than assaulting them saw me not have enough activations left to push for the win. Counting back resutled in a flat draw a there was less than 150 points difference between use.

Game Five - Mike T its a mirror!
Mike had brought nids, but without a dominatrix and with a couple of big swarms to my little ones. The nids basically met in the middle of the board and saw who could smash the other the quickest. 4 turns of carnage ensued with mass casualties on both sides but neither side able to force a win. When the points were tallied there was just less than 150 in it so another flat draw.

So a great weekend of gaming and I really enjoyed playing the nids with wave after wave of bodies pushing forward. I felt I had a chance in all the games with errors on my part normally the difference, though losing the Dom in game one was big momentum changer.

Thanks to Jon, Ryan, Chris, Mark and Mike for being great opponents and Steve for running another smooth event.

I think I may stick with the nid's for a while in 2012. You never know I may get better with practice!

In the NetEA lists where the rule was first used, the rule was intended to allow AV's and LV's to walk through woods and ruins without slowing the game to a crawl with dozens of walker tests per turn.

It was not invented with the intent of allowing Infantry to run around in minefields.

EUK's implementation may have intended that minefields be safe to Tyranids, of course.

In truth it was a moot point as I never had any intention of running over it in any case :)

Simon told me that the Forts are actually quite fragile but can deal out a lot of damage, one of his biggest wins was against my Eldar who were a little more fragile and couldn't muster quite enough combat/ fire power.... basically I found Simons Speed Freak list was particularly good VS Eldar despite it's downsides.

It was the only game I lost my Revenants, Si managed to take Tim's out too!

Simon totally smashed my Biel Tan when I played him a while back with a very similar list. I'd like to blame failed armour activations, assaults gone bad etc but in truth I was quite humbled.

Had a great time at the GT. Massive thanks to the EUK chaps for putting on a smooth* and successful event, and to Simon, Mike, Ben, DT and Jon for some great games.

Game 1 - Simon - Speed Freaks

Gunfortresses. 14 of them...

This turned out to be a good match up for me, with little AA and no shields, Si's Fortresses started falling quite quickly to my Fightas and Zzaps. And when his Uge Fortress Mob failed to activate on (I think) turn two, Simon was in trouble with his large mobile warband parked in front of most of my force. I was able to break most of the small formations, then hunt down the BTS. Never played Simon before, and really enjoyed game. He continued smiling all the way through, even when facing down the barrel of a potential 5-0 loss.

Result 3-0

Game 2 - Mike - 'Nids

Gribbly creatures. LOTS of them...!

Played Mike last year in the final round on the bottom table and he beat me, so I felt I owed him one...

Still unsure how I came out of this with a win. Took out Mikes Harridan before they could make a nusiance of themselves, meanwhile all of Mikes swarms, well, swarmed across the table right into my face and sat there saying "just you wait for turn two, sunshine...". I bunched up and weathered the unavoidable onslaught of assaults, lost a fair few activations, but was also able to break some of his. Ended up with just enough scoring units to snatch the win.

Result 2-0

Game 3 - Ben - Orks

Have faced Ben twice before, and lost on both occaisons. I was looking forward to having another crack at him. That was until I saw him place down two Supa Stompa mobs AND a gargant....

Ben came out to play pretty quickly, sending his Gargant after my big mob garrisioned in cover on a objective, and then assaulting the straightaway with his Landa! I got lucky and managed to critical the Landa thus avoiding the supporting fire. (3rd war engine cricital'd on turn one in three games...!) This left the gargant out of a flak bubble so I made the most of this by sending all my air in over the course of the turn, following up the the Zzaps in turn two to secure the BTS objective. Whilst this was going on however, Ben was systematically knocking down my formations to leave himself in a strong position going into turn three. Thankfully he made a mistake with a crucial activation and I mananged to pounce to grab the win.

Another really enjoyable game against a great opponent.

Result 2-0

I was at this point starting to get rather nervous, anyone who has seen me at previous tournies will know I'm more used to keeping the bottom two tables warm than the dizzying heights of table one... Thankfully I had MoK with me to spend the obligatory Sat night curry and sunday morning trip in pysching me up and convincing me that victory against DT and his Eldar was a mere formality....

Game 4 - DT - Eldar

DT was another I faced at last years GT, and lost. Although I wasn't confident of avenging that one.

He out manoeuvred, out shot and out fought my boyz, quickly hemming me into a quarter of the table.
I attempted an all-or-nothing assault on his BTS with my landa squadron, but after flying into CAP and a load of flak, the only thing his BTS had to worry about was small amounts of green flesh and aircraft debris drifting down on the breeze...
Then, with victory in the bag, DT took pity on me and attempted to retain with his Vampire full of Banshees to claim my blitz to finish the job quickly instead of waiting until the next activation. I implored him not to wait and get it over with as that was what toy soldiers is all about. He then proceed to fail the roll...

I have a sneaky suspicion that DT will never do this again with me...! (for what it's worth Dave, you did earn my Most Sporting vote there and then!)

Result Draw (18-14 in DTs favour)

Game 5 - Jon - Speed Freaks

After a bit of final round fixture juggling I ended up being paired with good friend and long-time adversary Jon and his air heavy speed freaks. We'd travelled up together and had agreed that we wouldn't play each other unless we were contesting either the bottom or the top table.

I didn't fancy facing off against so many fliers, but figured I'd give it a shot.

Jon started the game by finding my biggest flak formation, and then proceeding to send his planes directly at it until they broke. Ho hum.

Also stripping away a couple of smaller formations meant that by the start of turn two I only had a single flak wagon alive!

Meanwhile I set about sending all of my air after one of his FOUR KoS BTS formations. I spent the whole game attacking them and thanks to some shocking dice managed to finally break them on turn three.

Jon played really well, keeping me on the back foot and preventing me from holding any other objectives - well deserving of his 2nd place.

Result 1-3

Finished 4th overall and lost out on most sporting courtesy of a dice-off with Tim, achieved my best ever finish and avenged two previous losses (Mike and Ben). Overall a great weekend and looking forward to next year!

Cheers
Reedar

*With the possible exception of Steve phoning on Sunday morning as we were driving to Maelstrom to say "If you get there before me - tell Dave not to put the fixtures up! I need to check something..." The concencus between us in the car was that Steve was aware he was in danger of loosing the championship to DT and was desperately trying to fix it in his favour........

Cheers for the games guys, was an awesome weekend.
Hopefully should be getting ~3 new people to come to the winter warmer, but yet to descide if I want to use the silly plane list (albeit with 1BTS instead of 5) or try to get my chaos finished

Aye, will have to weigh in and say that I had a great time too...I'm never bringing Siege to a tournament again but I had a great time trying it out; some really close games; but the trench troopers have a very different playstyle to many other epic armies: you HAVE to know when to start pushing forward...

That Nid's vs Dangerous Terran test rule does need re-writing though!

A particularly one-tactic style, unfortunately... there's a reason we developed the Krieg list, after all.
