I used to just buy flat varnish or paints from places like K-mart and they served well.

I never use any gloss varnish as a top coat on models. If I do use gloss, its because its harder wearing (in most cases) than matt varnish. So in cases where a gaming figure is likely to endure a lot of handling & bumping, I do a coat of gloss followed by a coat of matt to dull the shine.

Thanks for the advice all. The models will be used for gaming, but I'm going to be really careful with them. I think I'll pick up a matt spray from a model shop then try 1 gloss coat then 1 matt on a test stand and if that looks ok go with that for the rest of them.
Now back to the painting, these arms are taking longer then I thought, I've only done 8 today and it's already 11pm, oh well, I should get more done tomorrow.

I have to admit to been terribly lax and virtually never varnishing any of my models....
Usually because they are never finished... I always like to add a few details here and there.
Having said that very few have ever needed remedial work.

Sounds very similar to me with my own projects. I'm forever getting sidelined & working on loads of different things at any one time. I had hoped that doing theWorkbench on my Mercenary Brush site would force me to complete projects I start like it did with the speed IG, but as you can see, I still start new stuff far too often!

I set myself a task to finish painting all the arms on my troops today, and at midnight I have just finished, whew.
I can't wait for tomorrow, I get to paint in another colour, roll on brown paint!

After last night I have decided to change from painting all the Orks together (i.e. head first, then arms, then brown bits, etc...) to finishing one stand at a time. It was just getting too boring the other way.
I've just finished my first stand and I now realise how naive I was in thinking this would be done soon. Had I known how long it would take me to paint them all in these colours I think I would have chosen a simpler scheme then the one I have. Still, it's going to give me a hobby for longer then I first thought and I will have something to be proud of at the end  .
My brother is back now so I can use his camera to get a better close up.

Like the look of them so far. My old orks are painted in a really simple scheme, so this time around I'm going to aim for something similar to these, but I've started my wagonz first, so I've still got the infantry to look forward to. (30 stands does look a lot! I've got about that amount to do so I'm not relishing it at all.)

One thing that would have made it a lot faster is if all those years ago I hadn't glued the damn things to their bases. I should have checked to see if you can remove them from their bases before starting really, having to squeeze the brush around the other models is a pain I could do without.

I have finished my first mini formation. The end of the infantry is still a long way off, but at least I can see it now .
I'm painting them in groups of six, with each group having different colour shoulder pads and/or spot. The first six are red pads red spot, the second six are red pads yellow spot, etc... This should allow me to identify which Orks belong to which formation.
I don't know if anyone can help but I'm thinking of making a building out of mould of cardboard. I found this thing a few days ago and I think it would make a great terrain feature, but I'm not sure how to do it. Does anyone know if Plaster of Paris would work? Or maybe some other material since the mould is so weak. Anyway if anyone has any info on that sort of thing I would really appreciate it!

Those are some nice looking orks!
That building idea should work ok if the cardboard holds. A friend of mine made some good looking industrial buildings by pouring plaster of paris into some big battery casings. Only trouble with plaster of paris is that it is prone to chipping.

I'll give Plaster of Paris a go then, I might steal your idea for using battery casings too if you don't mind, that sounds good.
The painting has slowed right down, I started thinking about how many I have got to do and my moral went right down. I managed to make myself think of just one stand at a time earlier today and managed to finish two more infantry though, so I've got 8 of 30 done.
I decided to give myself a bit of a break and paint some Killa Kanz in between infantry stands. Here is the first test one I've done, I think I'll stick with this colour scheem, not least because it's easy!
