They have 6+ Armour, no Firefight ability, and are in a SR 1 army.

If you're finding them to be a durable assault formation, something's gone wrong.

Only question w/ genestealers is whether they get scout or not. If the former, then they are usable but not overpowered (compare to rough riders); if the latter, then they are terrible.

Just compare them to Rough Riders: they lose the 6+ firefight for First Strike on their second attack. That's a reasonable swap, and makes them worth basically the same.

Just like RRs, I've never seen anyone maxing out on genestealers, I've never seen more than 2 formations of them used. If it was such a problem, surely people would exploit it?

In my experience I've certainly not found them even remotely durable; as soon as one or two are dead they really struggle.

Is the ability to add an inspiring character for that guaranteed +1 the problem with smaller formations?

If so is it worth considering dropping the Brood lord from the list? From old fluff wasn't he a super stealer basically, and the stealers all reverted to being under the control of the hive mind when the main tyranids arrived?

At 50pts I've found him actually rather expensive for what he brings to this list.

The Broodlord only appeared in 40k 4th edition, he wasn't in the old fluff. Are you thinking of the Patriarch?

Broodlord - Craploads of them everwhere. "Squad Leader" equivilent.

Patriarch - One per planet. "Supreme Commander" equivilent.

On numbers, you'd expect about 1 in every 20 Genestealers in a typical Tyranid horde to be a Broodlord.

They may actually not be notable enough to be worth keeping in the list.

Every single squad of Genestealers in 40k can swap out a normal Genestealer with a Broodlord, and a squad can be as small as 5 Genestealers with a maximum of 20. So yeah, very common really.

Yes. "can" not "is" as in "every Imperial Guard Squad is led by a Sergeant".
Broodlords are as optional as Exarchs in Aspect Warrior Squads.
