I'm curious to know why the Evil Space Elves haven't received any love from either of the furry productions houses....

Cuz a Fancy Mail Guy attempted it first?
Or that they aren't that popular?
Or because the Furry Animals are loyal to the God-Emperor of Mankind instead Xenos filth? ::)

I know Blue furry only does stuff he would play, and he doesn't like pointies. I think Wet furry might have a phobia of curved surfaces. ;)

Semaj did some (though over-sized rather than true scale sadly, so I wasn't interested myself), plus Stingray mentioned something along the lines of it being odd that he started with tin men as pointy ears were his real love, so maybe more will happen at some point. I imagine all the curves would be a pain to model.

Personally I'd like to see a flamey-crystal, a dead-noble and most especially pointy year titans. New better floatybikes would be good too, as the current ones are rubbish (though it may well be best to wait till updated larger ones come out maybe next year)

I never did any Evil Space Elves (and the Space Elves I did do matched the scale of existing models).

There are a few problems that arise when making space elf items through CAD, both related to curves in 3 dimensions. It is difficult to replicate curves in 3 dimensions because they are more difficult to measure than straight lines. The best way to do it that I've found is to measure a whole lot of points along major features of a model (making a point cloud). But, even if you can manage that, you still have alot of work left to do because generating a volume from a point cloud can be frustrating.

As a side note, the newer evil space elf items look to be a bit easier to replicate than the 10+ year old regular flavor space elf items because the new stuff seems to be made from simple extrusions of 2D cross sections. Of course, they've undergone a few boolean subtractions that act to obfuscate some of the cross-sections, which prevents them from be too easily copied. Still, it is rather obvious that the new stuff was drawn in a CAD program, while the older items were hand sculpted.

One other thing to note with regard to true scale - true scale cannot work for any thin part. Gun barrels, walker legs, masts, etc. must be drawn thicker than what a true scaled model would dictate (this is also true at 28mm scale, which is why all GW models carry elephant guns). This is because strength (vs bending forces) is a function of the diameter of the part raised to the 4th power, so doubling the diameter gives you roughly 16 times the bending strength. Now, what does that have to do with eveil space elves? well...

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the human mind can spot the difference between two curves better than it can between two straight lines. Space elf parts can be ruined by one poorly drawn curve. Now imagine that some of the curves must be changed because of the scaling concerns I mentioned above. The designer has to find a solution that minimizes the change to the overall look of the model, while at the same time ensuring that the part is robust. Often that means drawing a new set of curves that cannot be directly related to the original, larger scale part.

So, if you are a good artist (unlike me) maybe you can give it a go. If not, just do what I'm doing - take your time, take alot of measurements, and redraw things over and over.

My main issues with naughty space elves are:

1) Just not interested in general, and have plenty of more interesting projects. This is, of course, purely subjective, and not meant as a criticism of naughty space elves.

2) Naughty space elves tend to feature thinner surfaces which are impractical at smaller scales, as Semaj pointed out.

I generally echo the sentiments above.

Without any desire to own an Evil Space Elves army myself, I'm not sure I could justify the expense of making an army.

I think the Vehicles would be pretty easy to do, infantry tough but do-able.

Is there a catalogue or price list for products of wet furry mammal?

Thanks

James

well, there's a guy that works for a firm that has big brown trucks delivering packages who might be able to get some evil pointy ones from a guy in a shed in Canada.

Possibly

They match the metals for sure, but not the truescale FW ones which I prefer personally and are all I use (I even went to the trouble of buying extra FW Wave Serpents yonks ago so that I could convert the guns from them onto the metal Vypers to make their guns not comically over-sized. I also scrape down the underside of Vyper and Jetbike fins to be much thinner). Each to their own though and your models do look great.

FW do everything truescale regardless, which looks great, but is occasionally impractical like the FW Fire Storms which have paper thin barrels that bend or break at the slightest touch.

Yeah, silly muppet, they're white. The company name implies that they're part of the government and fast, but everyone knows the real Feds aren't fast at anything.

Maybe the white trucks were muddy?

:)
