Check out the Baccus basing system.

It's an amazing foundation for painting awesome bases fast.

I do one of two things and sometimes a combination of both :) First is the simple method where you go out and find some sandy/rocky soil and clean it up. Use the smallest particles as you standard layer of basing material and the larger stuff as gravel/rock outcroppings on the base. affix to the base with PVA glue and paint as you see fit.

The second method involves using greenstuff to sculpt the base for the minis to fit in. I typically use this when I have the old square bases and I want to give the formations a bit of variation. the mixed version puts some gravel on top of the GS after it hardens.

After that flock as you like for effect.

Tiling grout is pretty funky for building up a base and giving a sandy texture for painting.
