On terminators, I think you learned your lesson about shining spears, and perhaps a more general one into the bargain - don't just look at your units' strengths, but also your opponent's units'. Lance might look good for killing RA terminators, but spears are CC and don't have RA so will die quickly to MW. Each spear averages 1/4 kill, but each terminator averages a kill on its own (one 3+ MW, one 3+ with 4+ save) so they will give 4 kills to every one of yours. Funnily enough, you'd be better off in firefight - the ratio is the same but the overall average number of kills is lower, so by minimising your losses you're more likely to keep your bonuses for inspiring and numbers.

Yeah; I'm thinking of some way to combine jetbikes in base to base, forcing them to use firefight and losing their extra macro weapon attack, with, say, firedragons .. Anyone done this? Other tactics that'll work?

Oops; thanks for the clarification (o:

That means that IG support squads and SM Devastators are also at one attack per base in a firefight? We've been playing both wrong then =P

Indeed, those units also only get one attack in assaults. See striking scorpions and dire avengers for examples of units with multiple dice. Terminators also get an extra attack (in CC only, and note that only the extra attack is a MW).

Yeah; we played units with 2x in their weapon line as having 2 dice in firefights. Thanks again for the clarification (o:

In some sense Epic is just a glorified game of Rock, Paper, Scissors :) Fire dragons are a decent unit for assaulting terminators and in general are efficient against high armour targets like space marines, but try to get them behind RA serpents. Wraithguard are particularly well suited, being best for firefight and reinforced armour to absorb hits (but of course only 3 of them). CC titans are of course great for this taks but somewhat expensive. Bear in mind though that in general you should be able to beat terminators without killing any - by assaulting in numbers, staying out of CC and keeping your exarchs alive.

But to be honest, you're often best off steering clear and shooting them with MWs - scorpions/revenants/cobras. Disrupt is a good idea too. If you can't manage that, just limit their options as best you can by avoiding them - your army should be fast, and once teleported terminators are not.

So just don't take anything worth them assaulting, spread out, take the punch and either avoid them or shoot the living daylight out of them. Gottit; thanks (o:

You can take things worth assaulting (like Phantoms etc); Just make sure they have an expendable scout screen until the teleport threat is spent.

E:A has some subtlety in the strategy and tactics that takes a while to learn. You could do a lot worse than starting with Jaldon's excellent write up on building armies and setting up objectives.

Terminators can be countered in a number of ways
  • Use scout screens (or other cheap formations) to prevent the Termies assaulting into B-B contact with your high value ones.
  • Keep your formations within support distance of each other, so that if the Termies do assault they come under support for as well
  • As others have said, if you have to assault (or be assaulted) by termies, do it at FF rather than B-B as this removes the 4-5 fearsome MW attacks. Having inspiring characters (Aspect formations), or numbers (Guardians+Wave Serpents) will also help. And remember that skimmers can always 'rise off the ground' to avoid enemy in B-B.
  • Where possible, put the better armoured units in front at all times to absorb hits. Wave Serpents are very good in this respect because when placed in the front of Eldar formations they can also force enemy units in contact with them to use FF rather than CC factors.
  • Try to put one or more defender formations on OW. Even if they score no hits, adding a BM to the termies will help in the assault resolution. If you put MW or sniper armed formations on OW, this can be enough to deter the assault entirely.
  • Once they are on the table, shoot them with MW weapons or sustain with Rangers - those weedy 5+ shots become more respectable at 4+, and sniper both reduces the termie armour saves to 5+RA and allows you to pick off characters.
