What is NetEpic and where does it fit in?

I remember reading a while back about Net Epic and if I recall correctly it was a community driven response to mass dislike of the previous (pre Epic-Armageddon) official version of Epic from GW. I've been looking around and can't find much more to explain it. I'm downloading the rulebook right now, but what I really want to know is not so much what the rules are.

I want to know what makes Net Epic different currently from say Epic Armageddon and why some folks may prefer to play it.

I found this army builder: http://traitor-legion.appspot.com/

In it, the only list for Necrons I can find is under "NetEpic". So if I want to play Necrons, I need to use the NetEpic rules? Kinda confused here.

I don't need anyone to spoon feed me answers though, just an idea of what to search for, posts or a link somewhere.

Thanks.

The confusion comes because as well as NetEpic, there's also NetEA, which is the user-led continuation of Epic Armageddon after GW abandoned it.

Ah ok, wait this makes sense now. In the army builder the lists I mentioned are listed as "NetEA" not "NetEpic". My bad. Still interested in finding out more about NetEpic though. Rulebook should be down in a while. Download seems really slow.

Ok, basically it's as follows:

NetEpic was created, as you said, by fans after the switch from 2nd edition to 3rd edition epic (Epic 40,000). Many fans weren't happy with 3rd edition, which was extremely streamlined and abstracted.

Netepic is therefore an extension of 2nd edition, and as such is a high-detail game, with many special rules and not many abstractions. This is great if you like detail, but it does lead to slower gameplay.

Epic Armageddon (4th edtion) was GW's attempt to fix things after the failure of 3rd edition. It has streamlined mechanics like 3rd edition, but has a much higher level of detail. Many consider it the perfect balance between streamlining and detail. GW stopped supporting EA a few years back and NetEA came into existance as a way of the fans developing the lists for the other races not covered by GW, and to balance those that were.

There are also a couple of other offspring EA versions out there for the tournament scenes in the UK and France.

Essentially, Epic Armageddon (whether using the orginal lists, netEA or local tournament ones) is the biggest played Epic game out there, so it's the easiest to find a game for, and is my personal favourite. NetEpic is for those who like more detail and the 2nd edition mechanics, though it sacrifices game speed and has a lot less players in most areas.

NetEPIC is for gaming on a grander scale. The basic formation is a company, whereas with Epic:A its a platoon (even the Guard infantry company's in Epic:A are only 60 men).

So its for really big battles. A bare bones space marine chapter costs just 8,100 points.

Which is really only 20% under the EA Chapter, at 10050 pt. Of course that's short a squad each from the 6th and 7th Comapnies due to formaiton size/combat losses. The justification for the Company size in EA bothers me, too. Just not as much as BlackLegion.
