Hmmmm.....you mean a varnish when you say dullcoat right? Pooop. How would you get them off if you weren't going to varnish them? Or do you have another plan to stick them on something to paint them? Eh?

I do. I suppose you could let them soak for a little longer, allowing the glue to soften even more and be real careful when you pull them off. Another option would be to make sure the water doesn't come above the cardboard. It should soak into it well enough and loosen the glue from underneath without affected the paint job.

Just HE at the moment. I have Orcs, Copplestone Orcs and the makings of a Dogs of War army but those are long term.

Got the flesh basecoat and wash down as well as just over half of the white base coat this week.

Image

For the flesh I use Tallarn Flesh as a base coat and then wash it with Ogryn Flesh. Next week I'll head back and do the eyes, highlight with Tallarn Flesh and then Elf Flesh.

Image

The white is a Astronomican Grey basecoat, followed by a very light gray and then white.

Image

I'm hoping to finish these four units by the end of July. If I can keep to a unit per week I should be done sometime in Nov. :P

Stunning Dave,

Very impressed with how these little fellows are coming along, cant wait to see the final army shot, big respect for keeping slogging on with these, its at this point myself when painting large forces get fed up with painting the same thing and move onto other units or conversions, and the endless cycle never ends ;D bliss ;)

Keep up the great work regards epic

Me too, you use the same army painting discipline when it comes to Epic Tyranids. I am most impressed by it, since I do not have it myself. The grayish white and the flesh turned out really well. I often look to Warmaster but cannot make up my mind about it.

Thanks guys.

The local store's painting nights definitely help with the batch painting. You're effectively there for only three hours, but it definitely makes painting easier as it's a social environment with no distractions other than sarcastic comments from the peanut gallery (aka the other painters :P).

The white's coming along this week, and I'll probably get it done. We'll see if I can finish the flesh as well.

Heh... with as few people who bother painting their minis at my shop, I keep telling myself I need to talk with the owner and see about setting up a painting session or class as soon as I get through my own backlog :)

We have about five regulars now (the owner, a WM/H player, a WH player, Matt and I) and three to four "ringers", but every now and then the planets align and we get a dozen people in.

Like I said, they definitely help in getting stuff done and can prove pretty humorous. Last night's running joke involved converting a new Cockatrice model that was missing a leg into a pirate with a peg leg, and putting a human on his shoulder to serve as his "parrot" for good measure. Also, the music at the store can be hilariously inane.

It's usually pretty good but there are a few gamers who's social skills are rather... lacking, to put it politely. That can make the night one to forget, but on a whole I'd say definitely start one up.

I managed to finish the white as well as the flesh on these guys this week. I ended up with a few extra painting nights due to a body surfing injury last weekend that ruled out climbing for this week. So, I turned to the tiny elves instead.

Image

I also started the red on one of the strips, that'll be next week's project if I get to paint at all while on vacation.

Image

I'm still hoping to have them done by the end of July, any thoughts on basing? Right not I'm leaning towards sand/pebbles with a quick base coat and drybrush followed by some kind of flock.

Image

Not sure what I'm going to start on next, it'll either by the spearmen since I have so many of them or maybe the Chariots and Bolt Throwers for a "break".

Super job on the paintwork Dave ;) , As for basing im no basing expert but some of the folks on th eforum do that grey rubble with the superfine grass work strand in a few places which looks pretty nice,

How many of these go on a stand anyway or are they just left as 2 per stand !

Four per stand is the usual, so 8 guys per base.

Work continues on the archers. The red and bows are now done. What's left are the quivers, fletchings and hair. Looks like it'll be taking one week longer than July as I didn't get a chance to paint last week while on vacation.

Image

Here's some close-ups of all the variants. I'm going to have to do a round of touchups once everything is done, I was definitely sloppier with these than I was when I was doing the test strip.
