How heavy of a drybrush are we talking? Just to get the raised edges or enough for it to start to get on the flat panels as well? The mud wash must really turn the red purple.

Dave: just enough to get the raised edges. The delvan mud shouldn't do anything of the sort. To turn the model purple, it would need blue in the wash and delvan mud is a blackish brown. On a lighter base it will shade nicely darkening the reds in crevasses while doing little other than tinting and unifying the colors on the more open areas.

Elsmore: here in the States you typically have an amber turning signal and a headlight on each side, blue or yellow works for the headlight but yellow doesn't coat well over dark backgrounds and seemed boring next to the amber light. Blue works because of the blue in the red hull color and breaks up the reds a bit. The orange is just standard. I could probably just do blue but it seemed boring.

Ok, and now for the second test model. This one was painted with the exact same formula as the previous with the only difference being that I primed this one in white. I think this is a much better looking red for the Blood ravens than the purplish that came out of the black primer. I'm really not a fan of the premoulded bases though. They are hard to get the model glued in place securely because of the track impressions.

Yep that's a better red. Although, have you thought about making it slightly more red again with a very thin filter of Blood Red followed by a GW red wash?

Also how did you do the black on the radar dish? It looks like it has a couple of stages of blending. What were the colours used? It comes up nicely.

That was next on my list had the initial shading for the red on this one stayed too purple but I'm pretty happy with the red this time around. They don't use quite as bright a red as Blood Angels so dousing it with a couple of coats of delvan mud help to bring out the richness of the reds while not being quite as bright.

The dish was done using my newer black formula. Basically a mix of black and codex gray with a touch of enchanted blue for some subtle shading on the dish and the first layer of highlight on the edges followed by codex with a touch of enchanged blue for the second stage and the third stage mixes a bit of white into the mix. The final stage is a fleck of white at the corners for "pop"

Mate,

So I have just picked my jaw up off the ground, wow, that did turn out a treat, I like the red is is much lighter than the last test. This is fantastic work mate, you just keep blowing us away with your work.

Cheers
Aaron

Thanks! Well just for kicks I posted the damocles up on Coolmini... and I've got to say I'm shocked. I had expected it to end up around a 7 at least but it's showing up at a 6.3 and seems to still be dropping. Did they recently change their vote weighting? That model is far above simple table top quality even compared to my other epic stuff that's getting the same rating.

anyway... back to the rest of the razorbacks...

I have found that CMON is no place for small scale miniatures. What helps with the rating is if you include a 28mm mini just for scale. Also I think to many voters think the scale is 1 for "dont like" and 10 for "like" but thats just speculation.

No Vaaish, on cmon they only want to see things highlighted/blended up to white. NMM to the core etc.
They do not want realistic good painted models, they like models which are unrealistic (going up to white is crap as it is just not realistic and fake) and nmm only works in a static diorama with source lightning.

edit excellent painted!

Cool mini isn't a cool place at all for anything that's not 28+mm.

I always though cool mini or not basically boiled down to something between a retail ad and a personality/popularity contest.

Vaaish your painting is awesome and really sets a high standard.

I've removed the image for now. I guess I was a little surprised since I've put plenty of epic models up and quite a few painted a while back that aren't up to the level of the Damocles and mot of those have held pretty steady around 6.9 and 7.1 on the site. Putting up one that's obviously a jump in painting quality and having it rated as a 6 or under was rather something of a shock.

I think you should not be too concerned about the ratings at CoolMiniOrNot. The number of people following your threads here and over at WarSeer should be enough. Your thread rating over there is quite fantastic as is the number of views, and that is definitely a 28mm audience.

Keep up the good work,
Fredmans
