Fantastic painting job Vaaish, the wraiths are really nice :)

Thanks! As I said I'm mostly happy with them, but I've been at a little bit of an impasse with my painting lately. I feel that I'm able to hit very high tabletop and low display standard regularly and even have the technical basework laid for GD or high display quality but I just can't seem to push them over the edge so they "pop" or get quite the feel I'd like. In other words, they look alright but they are still a bit plain or lacking somewhere.

Imho, if you want your minis to "pop" is to add more highlights, more shading etc... The time consuming and painfull painting process.

I've been meaning to ask, what is the vivid green you use Vaaish? Is it a personal mixer or a store bought colour? It looks like bilious green over consecutive darker greens, but I'm not 100% sure that's true.

cheers

Scream, the contrast (I think this is what you are getting at) does help make a mini pop visually, though the pop I'm referring to is more from the detail that's added in conjunction. Things like the manual chipping method that's popular or the sponging technique as well as complex freehand bits and advanced material properties. Most of the time I dislike the ornate freehand, which makes filling spaces with those motifs difficult even though it raises the level of the painting. I've been working on the last of my own IF the last week and putting more effort into things like contrast and definition of detail. Hopefully they will be based by the weekend.

Dobbsy, that green is a combination of several layers. I typically start with snot green over black since it gives an intense, dark green. I Follow that with a layer of goblin green blended in and then work thin layers of starburst yellow over the goblin to make it glow.

So next project done. I've long needed a couple more devastator detachments for my own marines and I decided to try out some other techniques rather than my usual weathering with these guys. Playing with higher contrast, shading and some basing. Yellow is still a hard color to take a pic of, but this is mostly accurate. I'm pretty happy with the results too. Now on to some test minis for Blood ravens. Hope you enjoy them!

Mate,

Excellent looking Devastators, I like the new technique, they look awesome. Looking forward to seeing the Blood Ravens. Has your store had a restock of foam trays yet?

Cheers

Great devastators. I think you are developing into a class of your own.

Thanks! This time around I did my normal technique with Sepia wash and delvan mud in the darker recesses, but I also went back and touched up the contrast with a bit of pure white for highlights and went back in with black to sharpen some shadows around the shoulderpads on the missile troopers as well as joints. I also worked on little color adjustments like making the leather pouches on the missile guys a bit more red in tone as well as trying to make the librarians appear a bit more shaded and using some blue in shading the missile launchers and bolter casings. Sgts. got most of the treatment in the face.

Basically more play with light to show shading and global illumination on the models as well as making sure the detail is more defined from previous paint jobs. The downside to all this is that now my original devs and tacs look like crap.

Hey Vaaish, what techniques are you going to use on the Blood Ravens? Will it be the new one, the old one or a combinattion of both?

Cheers
Aaron
