Still equates to at least 8 or 9 dead guys, and probably all of them as it'll likely be a MW that kills it.

Marines in rhinos are very different; it's not all eggs in one basket.

I take the -1 to hit on the infantry+allowing AP shots over potentially losing 2 stands for every 5+ save rhino or chimera dieing every time

For marines it's in most cases worth staying in, though they do become a MW magnet. For guard it's not worth it.

It's situational, I would often leave Marines inside rhinos when deploying against the pre-downgrade Feral configuration Chaos Warhounds for example, as the potential losses from losing a Rhino are offset by the higher possibility of remaining fully combat capable. This especially discourages early Double move attacks.

Zombo is probably right on the maths about marines v's more conventional shots.

Oh my look at all the junior tacticians ! ;) Dismount from APCs too soon, you lose mobility, too late and lose both the carrier and troops. Basic tactics requires you to move from cover to cover, whether mounted or dismounted. Move the APC(s) to the closest covered and concealed position near the objective, then dismount ... My gaming crew learned that "Tactic" after a few games ... I learned it ... well you know my background ... ;D If you spend too much time running around in the open, you'll sooner or later draw fire. At Ranger training, the saying was "Speed is Security". In the game that equats to spend little to no time in the open especially for Infantry mounted or dismounted ... ^-^

Does your training take into account that your troops will be always spied on by invisible spotters which will reveal your position to the artillery?

Hiding from artillery (and aircrafts) isn't possible with the current Epic rules.

How dare you suggest that real world platitudes don't apply completely to Epic. Being an absolute recreation of warfare in every detail, any failures doing so will be down to you, not this game of tiny space mens shooting each other.

Well yes, it does as in the Real World we have to camo our positions, have counter-battery, CAP, etc., etc. ... however, I'm not saying Epic rules reflects all reality. And as always it depends on the rule system you use, modifications to those rules, etc., etc. ...

No I didn't say that ... it is not an exact recreation of reality. However, the conundrum of when to dismount your troops in the game, can be eased by keeping your loaded APCs under cover as long as possible ... Cover could also mean under a "Flak Umbrella". Also making enemy artillery priority targets, to make it easier to maneuver. In our "gaming universe", (or as Tas put it - "The L4 SoTR") we go by a few tactical concepts. *Titan Superiorty - Titans' primary mission is as mobile weapons platforms. They're priority target is other Titans. No close combat weapons on Titans, only as many long range weapons as the Titan can mount to destroy other Titans at long range. Destroy enemy Titans early in the game. *Suppression of Enemy Artillery - Use Airsrtikes, Teleporting, Drop Pods, etc. to destroy enemy Artillery as soon as possible. *Cover friendly Artillery and as many friendly positions as possible under a "Flak Umbrella". *Once you destroy or neutralize enemy Titans and Artillery, it allows your other ground forces(Infantry, tanks, etc.) to maneuver more freely. That's just some of our "Tactics" for Epic gaming. BUT as always - Do What Works For You ... Not me ... And obviously SOME of those "Tactics" are based on (my) real world experiences. Only worked in on the gaming table and the paradigm of rules ...
