I'm just getting into the 6mm Epic hobby, and started off by just painting the bases dark green. OK, but not great. Now that I've run out of GW bases with the countersunk holes, it looks even worse with my dudes standing on disks glued to bases... So I'd like to add some sort of texture or foliage to improve the overall look, and attempt to hide their "mini-bases" atop the Epic bases.

So what do you finish your bases with? I've not seen too many threads on this here. Can you give me some ideas (brand names would be helpful) that have worked for you, and links to photos? I have lots of basing stuff for 25-30mm figs (mostly Gale Force 9 stuff, and Games Workshop), but that would look very out of scale for these 6mm guys.

Thoughts?

Really? I've looked at the sand I have (no brand name there, just some sand used for concrete, of consistent grain size), and it's too coarse...

you'll find 90% of the pictures on this site have been based with sand of one form or another. Beach sand is less coarse.

Hmm, as much as my instinct is to say "Wait. Just sand? I don't have to pay 12.99 for a one ounce plastic tub of the stuff?" I'll see if I can't find better sand than the stuff I have...

A little bit of static grass with the sand looks graeat, too. And if it's the actual bases that you need, litko makes anything you could want. I just special ordered octagonal bases for my chaos army.

The Baccus basing system is the best purchase you'll ever make :)

I use textured paint. It is like paint with sand in it.

I do not use static grass as I look at that as being 28mm. You should be able to find fine grass to glue on.

I use play sand. Very fine, consistent size, and of course free, I just have to steal it from the sandbox... GF9 has some nice flock mixes and clump grass, but I've never gone overboard on my basing.

You could also look into picking up a bag of gardening sand. It's fine like beach sand, and a bag of it will last quite a long time.

Sand, flock, static grass, pretty much the same stuff id use on 28mm really. As Frogbear says, textured paints are great for epic bases as well, i use three with different levels of coarseness.

What kind of textured paint, and where do you get it? A quick half-hearted google only showed me textured paint made for walls, I assume that's not the kind you're using?

The ones i use currently are from vallejo, ive also made my own in the past by mixing tubs of PVA, sand and acrylic paint.

I buy laser-cut wooden bases on eBay in various sizes and shapes (rectangles, squares, circles, etc - I use various depending on the particular army and unit) and drill holes in them the correct diameter to fit individual epic models, it's cheap, easy and looks good while avoiding the raised up look of gluing the models on top of a base. I'm thinking about buying thin cut-able magnetic sheet to go underneath them then for easier transport.

Sandwise I use a mix of fine beach sand and other grades, including some from model railway shops, which are a LOT cheaper than GW.
