I recognized the same thing
when I painted my windows on my Imperial Fleet(red),
the ones I put very bright magenta on the edge turned out much better
the color on the edge has to be nearly as bright as the white dot in the dark(my experience)

Well I admit that the windows above are slightly clumsily painted, but that's the nature of commission work. The tip of my brush was dead but we had a deadline to reach. It also works better with some colours than others, but generally I've found that the more exaggerated the highlight at the bottom becomes, the greater the effect on the table. For example you clearly notice the huge difference between the GW valk painted...oh... just after the model came out. 2004? and the EW valk which has much more contrast. Or maybe it is just my eyesight that is getting worse and needs more contrast to see anything
