Test stand.

I've cleaned up the edge of the base already. Thinking of adding a little more definition to the plasma gun. Comments welcome.

Gimme some so I can paint them too ;)

Only thing I can think of is making the jump packs a little different color than the uniforms. makes them stand out a little more.

Agreed. For simplicity's sake, I would use the same colours you use for the weapons. They add a lot of good contrast to the models as it is.

The left hand (1st/HQ) company has had all their faces and visors painted, the right hand (2nd) is just washed. The fire support and mortars are just basecoated, of course.

I'm terribly impressed with how good these guys look with a simple basecoat and wash. It's really indicative of the sculpt and production quality that they are able to bear the load of minimal painting and still look good.

edit: Man that's a crappy picture. Proof of how amateurish I am at photographing minis I guess. Or that I don't have a digital SLR with a lens with deep focal range.

After getting my old trenches out for a game Saturday, I realized again how little I like them. They are about 6 years old, and a good deal too simple.

A reminder of the one's I'm talking about:

Here are the Mk IIs so far:

I went for trenches instead of defense lines since I could never justify the cover save from behind as well with the defense line style. I also made the lines zigzag for realism and to allow more stands to be placed in a shorter line. 3 of these have a frontage of 390mm, and are 510mm of line. They only hold a dozen stands though as 10mm of each is deadsapce between the stands. The lefthand one is almost ready for paint, just waiting for the spackle to dry. The righthand one only has the frames built, I still need to add the posts and spackle. I'll be making Emplacements also.

while very nice, they do cause a problem for anyone using not-that-size-&-shape bases
of course, i assume those people arent you

That's true, but it's a compromise I had to make, because I couldn't find a design I liked that fit both the 40x12mm and the 20x20mm bases. A 20-25mm wide trench is just visually unappealing. Most of the locals are on the new style bases, though there are some square bases and even some GF9 hardboard bases around.

Quick question for those who have used Spackle/Plaster before.

Does the material add enough texture to drybrush well, or should I plan on adding sand over top? Also, is it porus enough that sealing (with PVA or similar) is advisable?

The stuff I use doesn't, I put something over it. Also, get it on there without peaks is next to impossible. I usually put some water on it once it's dried and then try to smooth it out a bit.

I find it's not enough for 40k,

And too much & not enough for epic... unless you wanted a rocky cliff/boulder look, then it'd be ok-ish.
(Too much big scale features, not enough small)

I used it for some FoW models, and definitely had to cover it with sand. It's fairly porous, but once it was primed / sanded it didn't soak up a ton of paint.

Hopefully I'll be able to finish blocking out two more of the Gun Emplacements for tomorrow's game. I think I have a workable Bunker design as well, but that'll take longer and isn't a priority, since it isn't used in the Cadian list anyway.
