Hello everybody

The time has come for me to finally get round to a Tyranid army. Luckily for me I have been stockpiling Tyranid figures for just such an event, so in most respects I am good to go. However, I have only fairly recently discovered Netepic so I am short of ideas for all the new troop types you guys have introduced.

I think I am ok for Hive Queens as I have a couple of really large Hive tyrants (seriously, they stand head and shoulder above my other tyrants!) that will do the job. Zoats I have no clue about - the last zoats I remember were 3rd Ed Warhammer figures so I guess I need something along those lines in 6mm? Raveners, Devourers and Brooders I have no clue about at all, so any advice for proxies on these would be great. The Carnifexs are also giving me a headache, I have a couple of broods worth of fex models but they are really big (about the same size as an imperial knight), so I think would probably be better suited as Razorfex, however this leaves me with no normal Carnifex. I have heard that GW did make a small carnifex model, possibly for E:A? If so I can't find them on the GW website, so I assume they are out of production? Any info on these would be greatly appreciated.

Finally, I am basing all these questions and asumptions on the Netepic 5.0 Tyranid Army book. I guess there are plans afoot to do a Netepic Gold version at some point, is there any word on the likelyhood of anything changing or any extra stuff being added that I need to be aware of before I start?

Cheers in advance for any advice

- SM/TL Hive Tyrant: Hive Queen
- E:40K Hive Tyrant: Hive Tyrant
- SM/TL Carnifex: Razorfex
- E:40K Carnifex: Carnifex
- Zoat: body of a plastic Khorne flesh hound + torso of a tyranid warrior ? This is how I'm thinking of building mines
Image
- Raveners: I'm gonna use some metal Tyranid Ripper Swarm, they should do the job:
Image
- Brooders: scratch from 40K tyranid weapon bitz and a carapace thingy. According to NetEpic description, that may look like a rampant weapon

My main problem is about ripper swarms, if nobody sculpt them in 3D, I'll have to green-stuff some :/

According to the Tyranid Gold codex I've on my computer, there's no new profiles or detachment composition changes.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the info - most helpful ;D

I stopped playing epic around the time TL came out so I am not that aware of the newer stuff that came out for E:40K I assume everything pretty much just got smaller in most cases?

@Madmagician: Thanks for all those links, both threads are really useful. Congrats on your conversion skills, it never occured to me to use 40K stuff but they fit the 6mm scale suprisingly well.

@Scream: Thanks for the info on the Gold army book, I would hate to do it all then find a load of stuff had changed. Is there somewhere I can download the gold version you have or is it still a WIP?

@Zombocom: They are lovely, are they scratch builds and if so how did you do them?

Cheers

If you get the NetEpic 5.0 book from the wiki it is up to date and what the Gold book is based off.

You might not have noticed the Winged Tyrant (easy conversion) and Scythed Heirodule. There are good fan made proxies for the later, or you can just chop up a 40K Hormagaunt.

You have been given the answers for the Hive Queen/Tyrant and Carni/Razorfex bits. Good proxies exist for Raveners :D

For Brooders, I have seen Necromunda Milliasaurs used, though they are probably hard to get these days. Use of 40K plastic weapons is a neat idea. For Zoats, any 6mm Centaur will also do. Baccus, Irregular and Microworld games make some. I do like Screams conversion idea too though!

For Ripper Swarms I've just put greenstuff squiggles on bases, but nurgling bases would work if you can find them, Warmaster Rat swarms, and any of the swarms from D&D miniatures.

Thanks Zap

I have just printed off the 5.2 version, you were right that didn't know anything about the 2 new units. I have plenty of Hive tyrant models to make Winged Tyrants out of, is there any consensus on where to get the best wings for them from?

Also, do you have any insider knowlegde on a likely date for the final Gold version of the book?

Cheers again.

I used some wings off an old Mage Knight figure....Gargoyle maybe? As to Gold release, the draft book has been done and looks top notch. The plan is to go through the proofing/errata for all the books and release the whole set in one go. If I can count properly it is just the Slann/Necron book to go so I imagine things should happen "soonish" :D

OK thanks Zap, I will look up the mage knight figures and check out those wings! Great news on the books as well!

Further to the plans for my Tyranid army, I have now finished digging out all the Tyranid stuff from the depths of my wargames room and this is what I have come up with.

This is the first time that I have put it all together and there is a lot more than I realised, so it looks like I am going to be pretty busy. This project will also be running along with several others so I dont think it will be done in a hurry :(

Cheers for all the help offered so far!

Me again with a quick update!

I have made some progress, I have started painting all the Termagants and Hormagaunts, but I have been distracted by Zaps revelation that there are new units in the most up to date army book. I was particularly keen to have a go at knocking up a Scythed Hierodule, so without further ado here is what I have so far!

A friend gave me his 40K Tyranid bits box to use which gave me lots of options!

I sorted out and settled on these bits for the main body. I dont really know 40K tyranids that well, but I think they are the body of a genestealer, legs from a Tyranid warrior and 4 claws from something, possibly a Hormagaunt?
Image

I had a mess around with my clippers and glue and this is what I have so far. Oh I also decided to use the head from a ripper as I thought it tied in with Epic scale nicely!

Its fairly rough so far, particularly around the back legs. Hopefully some green stuff and maybe a couple of strategically placed armour plates will cover the worst of it.

I am struggling to come up with a convincing pryo-acid spray, this is 1 option I have toyed with but I am not 100% convinced it looks right. Any suggestions/thoughts would be helpful!

Thats it for now, I will keep you updated on any further developments.

Looks good. Try spreading the back legs apart some, but otherwise a good start.
