WEDNESDAY 24/12/2003

'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through Alaitoc
Not a creature was stirring, not even a Knarloc*;
The cruisers were hung from the craftworld with care,
In hopes that the Avatar soon would be there;

The guardians were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of shurikens danced in their heads;
And Wraithguard in wraithbone, and Warlock in runes,
Had just settled down under Lileath?s moons,

When out on the launch pad there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the wraithbunk to see what was the matter.
Away to the porthole I sped with a whistle,
Tore open the scuttles and armed a cruise miss?l.

The moon on the rim of the craftworld?s long bow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature Nightwing, and eight Shining Spear,

With a little old driver, a lively grand-dad,
I knew in a moment it must be Eldrad.
More rapid than eagles his war machines came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, PHOENIX! now, WARLOCK! now, PHANTOM and REVEN?NT!
On, COBRA! on SCORPION! On GREAT HAWK, and SERPENT!
To the top of the tower! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As mon-keigh that before the wild shurikens fly,
When they meet with the Eldar, get blown to the sky,
So up to the craftworld the cruisers they flew,
Nightwing full of runestones, and old Eldrad too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The crushing and crashing of each Titan?s hoof.
As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,
Down the wraithbone old Eldrad came with a bound.

He was dressed all in runes, from his head to his foot,
His clothes were all tarnished by heavy flamers? soot;
A bundle of runestones he had flung on his back,
And he looked a doom-peddler delivering flak.

His eyes - how they crinkled! His bright runes how merry!
His cheeks like dried raisins, his nose a blueberry!
His smug little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the point of his chin sharp as a cruiser?s prow;

The stump of a bonepipe he held in his false teeth,
And the wraithsmoke encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a thin face and was missing a belly,
He scowled and he grimaced like Demiurg in a melee.

He was skinny and glum, a right buggery elf,
And I laughed in hysterics, in spite of myself;
A blink of his eye and a shake of his head,
Soon gave me to know that I had loads to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And threw all the runestones; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his runestaff aside of his nose,
And foreseeing doom, up the wraithbone he rose;

He sprang to his Nightwing, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he flew out of sight,
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD FIGHT!"

With sincere apologies to you all for the lack of diary work , and in particular to Major Henry Livingston Jr. (1748-1828)

cheers :p

THURSDAY 'CHRISTMAS' 25/12/2003

Hi all,
after yesterday's poetic interlude, the diary gets back on track with some undercoating - the Guardian stands, the Revenant, the Great Hawk, the Storm Serpent, three Firewings (Fire Prisms), two Warp Hunters (Fire Prisms) and two Kinghts (Wraitlords) are now undercoated in black, so I have no excuse now!
Undercoating usually takes me an inordinate amount of time, because:
1 - I use stands on which I place the models to be undercoated (usually old spray cans), to permit me to rotate the model around to be sure I get all areas coated.
2 - Before doing the underside of the model I wait for it to dry well - impatience = finger marks on the undercoat, which look terrible. With our humid atmosphere, undercoat can take some time (c. 10 minutes) to dry, so spraying a dozen models can take some time. Using a piece of hardboard doesn't work well for me, because I either drop the models or (to avoid this) use bluetack or doublesided tape and inevitably peel off some of the undercoat when doing the underside (unless it's a based model, but I usually do not base vehicles other than walkers). I therefore generally gravitate back to my slow method.

Not having much more to say, I will pretend I'm giving some thought to the colour schemes.  The Mingel army includes a weird variety of old and new models and conversions. My rules are:
1 - I almost never use non-GW proxies, preferring what I call a GW tournamentable army
2 - The vehicles have to have an Eldar look, which, when converting, is not always easy - a few curvy wings usually help!
3 - the weapons described in the rules have to be included
4 - in the case of Eldar in particular, the model should reflect the name - a Cobra's weapon resembles the snake's hooded head striking; a Great Hawk should look - well, Hawkish (mine has a wide wingspan); a Storm Serpent is long and thin; and a Scorpion has a sting-oriented weapon. Again, not always easy (and not always borne by GW), but fun.
5 - A colour scheme to unify and diversify: unification - this is an army, not a hodgepodge collection of ramshackle troops and vehicles (i.e. orks! :p ). The Eldar have (in my eyes) a unified look, but can include some diversity (Aspect Warriors, Harlequins, Scouts, Exodites). My troops and vehicles will have a unified colour scheme: Mingel yellow and red. Diversification will come in the form of my Aspect Warriors (with traditional colours, but with yellow details e.g. helmets) and walkers, which in my imagination are individualistic (Titans) or iconic (Wraithlords), and therefore painted in striking and highly visible schemes - witness my red knight (i.e. Wraithlord). I'll include at least another red walker (the red ties in with the yellow-red main Mingel scheme); other colours worth considering would be neutral, such as black, white, copper, silver, or gold (no Tinbitz here!).

Ok, Christmas panygeric over! Tomorrow - I'm taking the day off from work to paint some stuff - namely my Eldar, but also some 40K Legio Fausta marines for a tournamet in February (I have one marine almost ready so far...  :(  :o )

Christmas cheers.

>> 2 - Before doing the underside of the model I wait for it to dry well

Just a note from someone who used to do finishing for a living - do the underside first.  You always want to finish your presentation side last.  The longer something sits around finished, the greater the chance of errors/dings/fingerprints/etc getting into the (formerly) finished side, requiring touchup or repair.

For a table-top army, the order should be underside, back, front, top, but you can typically combine some steps.

For an example, if I'm doing a large model like a titan, I will lay it down on its face first, then on the back, then standing up.  That way the top has almost no chance of dings, the front has very little chance, and if the back gets any problems, they can be fixed and covered in the final, upright spray.  I'll make sure the underside gets covered in the on-front and on-back sprays.

Of course, it's possibly that my painting skills do not warrant such attention during the priming and undercoating, but old habits die hard. :oo

I usually ding merrily on high (and low) areas... sorry, still on the silly Christmas mode.

:p

thanks for the tips nealhunt  :D
makes loads of sense - and if I'm trying to complete an army I can't afford to waste time on repair work.

THURSDAY 26/12/2003

Hi all,
busy modelling day - but (oh the shame :blush: ) not much Epic. :(  Because I finished off seven 40K Legio Fausta Terminators (after finally settling on their colour scheme) and organized a WHFB Dark Elf army and then spent a whole afternoon trying to find a good and FAST colour scheme for them. No luck yet.
De Epic: well, I painted the bases of the Eldar Guardians, as well as any scenery, and have painted the Guardians on one stand - it really takes very little to paint these guys if you stick to a simple colour scheme. Luckily, I'm warming up to the task, and might move on during the weekend.
Oh, I also started to paint the Storm Serpent. At least I didn't start any new conversion project (well, barring an Inquisitor model I toyed with for a while :p ), and I'm painting my first warhost, so that's good!

Cheers!

SATURDAY 27/12/2003

Hi all, not much work done today - esp. because I'm cleabning up more space marines (40K) for painting up as Legio Fausta and bec. I wasted more time on that dreaded Dark Elf (and even injured myself on his pointy spear  :angry: )

Anyway - if it's not much, at least it's on course - continued painting the Guardians - and added details to the scenery. The Warehost MAY be ready tomorrow - if so, pix will be posted.  :laugh:
Meanwhile, feeling hopelessly inadequate as Tuffskull's (presumably) Mach 3 diary nears take off! I'm in for a nervous breakdown!
cheers :oo

Hi all,
I didn't complete the Warhost - but they're nearly done at last, just some flock+cat litter to be added followed by the obligatory varnish.
I'm also considering dropping the daily update, and just add to the diary when something is ready or anything of interest crops up - there's a limit to the number of times I can say this Guardian warhost is nearly ready... :(  :(

THE THUNDERBOLT STRIKES.....

No, I've not joined the Imperial Navy: black day yesterday - reportedly (I wasn't in the room at the time) - Slaanesh in the form of our black cat Willow jumped down on my Warhost yesterday - a disaster equal to the fall of the Eldar.  :(

Fortunately, I built 'em well - no damage at all! Who said black cats aren't lucky (lucky for him, that is!). So - the Warhost IS READY - HUZZAH!  :D
Pix added
here. The last six pics (farseer downwards) are new.

Next - more Fire Prism equivalents as troupes for the guardian warhost - and the return of he war machines?

cheers :p

Some very cool stuff there Vanvlak. I particulary like the addition of the cogwheels behind the Farseer. The Firewings turned out really nice too i must say! :)  Great Work!

Cheers!
