Spectre, not particularly. I think it should wrap around the edge and disappear into the rear extension and be flat styrene strip instead of rounded. usually a wider base with a thinner center strip, but could look good as a thin strip with plates around it like you have on the back.

Ahh. I'll have to think on that one. It may well work out, but I would have to run it over the paneling I've already installed on the back next to the tower... Not terribly hard, but it would break up the paneling, and might lessen the effect.

And in my comtinuing quest for inexpensive and useful terrain, I have turned to the cheapest thing of all. Something I bought years ago and never used.

These are aquarium plant mats that I cut the pegs out of the mat and glued them into a 25mm round GW base along with a 1/4" washer for stability. They range from ~50-65 mm in height. I bought more than I could possibly need when I worked for Petsmart, so the bases are probably the limiting factor to how many I can make. The plants are still removable for now, I'll prime and base the bases and then glue the plants afterwords.

Decided my last set of trees were stupid. Did some research. Mark II.

Floral wire armature, wrapped with cotton thread. Woodland Scenics clump foliage to top it off. All on a GW 25mm round base. Paint is Charadon Granite/Graveyard Earth/Kommando Khaki base and a Dheneb Stone Khemri Brown trunk with a Devlan Mud wash. I'm pleased, and they're not terribly time consuming.

So I finally bit the bullet and got a test cast of my first two molds done.

Image

I ended up using OOMOO 30 and Smooth Cast 300. Clearly not perfect, but there was a guy on the side of the road selling maps, so that's all right.

Issues: Bubbles in virtually every corner of the larger building. Demolded slightly prematurely. Sticky residue and funky surface texture in places, probably partly due to premature demold, partly from uncleaned surface sealer.

I shook both parts of the resin well, as asked. Next time I'll wait a few minutes to let the bubbles settle out before mixing. That and a slower pour should take care of bubble issues for the most part. Otherwise I'll look into options. Patience all around will be important, as the premature demold shows. It's certainly a case of taking how long it seems like it ought to take, and multiplying by two in most cases. Cleaning the molds before the first cast better is also important. But overall, a good start. Progress as it comes.

There's also the technique of pouring enough to go into the corners, then pick out the bubbles with a toothpick, then complete the pour. Smooth-Cast 321 is better for that, since it has a longer pot time.

I would also suggest a light dusting of baby powder (corn starch). It doesnt show up in the cast and it helps break the surface tension so there will be less bubbles. I also suggest what otter says about picking out the corners with a tooth pick or other probe like device.

Are we talking about baby powder in the mold as a release agent, or mixed into the resin? I need a product with a linger pot life if I'm going to go into every corner by hand... Hmmm.

As a release agent. I sprinkle some in the mold, brush it around with a big brush, and then blow out the excess.

And it doesnt take long to hit every corner. You just need to move quickly and know where the bubbles will form. Hit it real quick and move on to the next corner

Got a quick paint of the first good quality cast of the the building.

Most of the larger air bubbles turned into impromptu battle damage, but
hopefully in the future less will be neccessary.

I also painted up most of my remaining SHT hulls for my Minervans, and the Primary Turrets for the Stormhammers (No pics yet) and Shadowswords.

I went for a Vaaish-style glow in the barrels, and I think it turned out pretty well. The secondary turrets still need working up, but these are by far the best looking of the EW UPVs.

Those are some sexy tanks (FYI that produces some much better pictures via Google Images than "sexy 'nids"). They do the sculptor and painter much credit.

What did you use for that blueish-gray? Fenris Gray with a blue wash?

Fenris with a Space Wolf drybrush and Badab wash, actually.
