Just a quick heads up on a new event for 2011 - Myself+MoK will be running a tournament June 9th+10th at Cut+Thrust Games Bristol.

The plan is that this will be a 2 day event with 4 4k games using the Epic UK lists http://www.epic-uk.co.uk/armylists.shtml with a late start (10/10.30) on the saturday and early finish on the Sunday (4/4.30) for ease of travelling. Of couse there will be the standard saturday night curry as well

At the moment we are looking at £20 per head with lunch included on both days though this will be finalised nearer the time - we are hoping to start selling tickets at the beginnining of March

So a Bristol tournament without the best feature of the Bristol tournaments?

Is this forcing use of Epic-UK lists rather than the usual relaxed Bristol tradition?

If so I’ll probably pass and wait till the next properly open Bristol/London one.

After discussions with Ryan I decided to run it for a number of reasons
- complaints about lack of southern tourneys
- to allow the large number of new players to have a go at an epic uk tournament to show that all epic events are run in the same spirit as the WW
- to have both types of event in the south

I hadn't realised that, for some, the attraction of the WW was a pissing contest over list development

No pissing intentions from me. In my opinion Epic-UK have made some damn fine lists and a smaller number of less so good ones and I think the same is true for the Net-EA. I look at both and if each has a list for an army I want to play I’ll run whichever seems to best represent it.

I just prefer the Winter Warmer style/ethos personally as it’s more open to everything and you can end up fighting Titan Legions, Necrons, Death Korps of Krieg, etc. I also no longer live in the south and have no job or income so if I'd prefer to only make the journey down for that sort of tournament.

Best of luck with the tournament though!

No problem Glyn I didn't have any gripe with your post - you've tried both tournaments and decide you prefer the open ethos of the WW. My hopes are to just show the friendliness, camaraderie+ sportsmanship of the WW aren't confined to that style but also supposedly more competitive formats.

That's a bit of an overreaction, steve, and hardly in lnie with the 'friendliness' youre trying to show.

I don't have any of the EpicUK armies and so a more open tournament appeals a lot more to me. Equally, I think it's very clear that, at least in part, the reason WW has rapidly become one of the biggest ever tournaments is due to the free list selection.

My reaction to your comment is no more a reflection of the friendliness of EpicUK style tournaments than, I presume, your first reaction of sniping at any other event format but your favoured one is of the ethos of WW style events

I'm not sniping. I saw the thread title and assumed another WW-style event, then was disappointed to see it wasn't what I'd hoped for.

I wish this tournament nothing but luck, and I'll be very interested in seeing what sort of numbers you get in comparison to WW.

Well hopefully we will get a smattering of northern regulars, some southern regulars, ryan+his group and I hope some of the new faces at the ww will give this format a chance

Chaps, come on, we're not off to a good start here!

My main intention with the Winter Warmer has always been to run it once a year, in winter! Whilst it is obvious that - yes - the focus on completely relaxing restrictions on army lists has greatly contributed to the events popularity, I simply don't have the time to run another event of my personal favourite type at the snap of the fingers (despite massive demand from the player base (see below)***).

I too would like the chance to give players a wide range of Epic gaming experiences and Epic UK style tourney play is just one (and won't the tyranids be out by then?!): I enjoy Epic UK events because I like pushing my little toy soldiers around the table and rolling dice (and whilst I'm at it I like the challenge of playing experienced players) and this event IS a little different (meet me halfway here guys!) in that we're playing 4k games so plenty of experimenting with army composition etc: call the event the 'Bristol Before Britcon Bigger Battle's Bash' (tm) and we're away!

All in all, this is an experiment: we've talked about the North/South divide with Epic which for many players is merely to do with cost of travel and accommodation and I believe giving the northern chaps a chance to return the favour by travelling down south we may open the floodgates a little more. Whilst of the belief that Epic UK style play has 'evolved' out of a core group of players situated in geographic proximity. Some of us have gripes about certain developments or style of play (my opinion is that the only divergence being that, yes, Epic UK events do tend to be a bit more competitive, but the people are just as friendly and the games just as fun).

Finally then, I would ask that people just chill a bit: I'm well known as a casual player and that's where I stand but I can't help but feeling a little 'had at' just for offering up to help bring an Epic UK event to a new (more accessible for some) location! The last thing that I think Epic tourney's in the UK need are to have too many events running all at once: if we were to hold a casual 'down south' tourney every other month or on a more regular basis then we would dilute the player pool and create even more divide, although happy to discuss all of this further I feel that perhaps it would be better that we start from fresh, take a breath, move any 'political' discussion that wish to continue to a new thread and leave the announcement thread as a positive and welcoming area which it currently is not
(would it be best to repost a new announcement thread and rename this one so as current discussions can continue?)

I would note that £20 is probably a little steep for what people expect from southern events though Steve.

***: please note: there is London Tourney in the bag for this year as well: it's going to be run along the same line as the WW (as far as I know) and it's current codename is something along the line's of 'Summer Sizzler'...!) Not all 'Open' tourneys have to happen in Bristol!

There may end up being multiple london-based WW-style events.

I think both formats have their particular advantages. As a casual Epic player with a less than encyclopaedic knowledge of the 800 gatrillion different NetEA lists, an "Anything Goes" event is a bit of a confusing prospect to me. The WW was interesting and I certainly enjoyed myself, but I also like going to a tournament with a reasonably limited selection of lists, such that I have a vague idea what I might be up against and won't spend most of the game trying to remember what everything is. That's not to say playing oddball armies isn't fun, it's still going to be a laugh and probably interesting - a learning experience if nothing else (and presumably it helps those developing the lists too) - but it's also fun to just rock up and play a game where you basically know what's happening from the get-go. I think it's good that Bristolians are catering for both types.

On topic, timing looks good to me and I'd like to play a tournament allowing bigger armies, so I'd hope to come along...

Regarding price I Cut and Thrust are developing a tournament pack over the next few weeks and the price will be determined by that. Alex estimated the pice for 2 days with 2 lunches would be approx £15-£20 with trophies. We'll get a concrete price soon
