The units and conversion work... meh. I'm much more interested in the bases. Specifically how you acquired the components for them. Talk more about that.

Re: the photos, the camera is probably darkening the model in response to the light cloth all around it. If you put it in its "spot focus" mode it'll help I bet. On the photos from your place, it just looks like it doesn't know what white balance to use.

I was impressed by those bases as well.

BTW, woodsies are available at http://www.dickblick.com/products/woodsies-wood-shapes/

Though it seems they may be discontinuing the rectangles.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Much appreciated. Wow, a promotion! My outlook on life is getting a little too positive - I'm sure mattthemuppett and/or Dave will be along to take me down a couple notches though, so all will soon be right with the world :P

yep, they're all crap and you've wasted your life painting them. Feel better now? The universe back in balance :)

what I want to see is the expression on the chaos marine's face - did you manage to paint a little "oof" on there? Either that or some small tears leaking out of the eye sockets. Otherwise it's just crap. Honest.

btw, my basement's looking good right now, even has a real girl in it ;)

Don't listen to him Matt, he doesn't know what he's talking about!

There's no way he has a real girl in his basement...

I checked both ends and they match up to the pictures I've seen, so I'm pretty sure it's a girl. Depending on how well I tied the knots, she should still be there when I get home too :)

There's been a noticeable drop in silliness on the painting forum, so it's time for another Emperor's Children update.

Just a few things to post here. First up, another two retinues complete, just minus the flock. I added purple to the mix of colors for these; one retinue has a pink/purple check on the shoulder pads (what a pain in the ass that was), which is pictured. The other one just has 1/2 pink and 1/2 purple split vertically on the pad:

I started on the daemons. Since I'm going all fluffy up in here I'm only painting daemonettes and beasts (suitably pink style). Here are the ladies, with their flesh a mix of Vallejo old rose and flesh. I'm going to wash that with ogryn flesh. The claws and feet are going to be highlighted various shades of grey:
Image

GW really dropped the ball on these; I'm not sure what's so irresistible about a chick with crab claws and a makeover straight from the Transylvania nos veratu club. Reminds me of Army of Darkness:
Possessed woman: "you found me pretty, once."
Ash: "Baby, you got real ugly."

And now for something completely different:

My Ordinatus Majoris, Mars configuration. I painted it to go with the rest of my AM stuff and superheavies (see the pasta entry above), except blotchy camo is completely beneath an ordinatus. She ain't hidin' from nobody. So, it's just blue with some yellow and bronze detailing:

I haven't gotten to use it much, although it made an appearance in a megabattle and is still famous for pulping multiple formations of cultists. uberchris still shudders, I think. :P

And finally, a bit of mischief.

Stalkers for the AA. Yeah, they don't exist in the list anymore, but I had already shelled out the $$ for hunters to serve as proxies. Our group will house rule 'em I think, since I'm not the only one.

These are the same as the other rhino chassis in the army, except they didn't have any neat chaos stuff on 'em, so I had to improvise with some childish graffiti on the back:

:P They are the Emperor's Children, after all.

Nice work :) I'm toying with doing an Emperor's Children list myself too.

I like/recommend wooden ply bases from a seller on ebay myself; they do a wide ranges of sizes and shapes (and you can ask them for custom ones) and they are cut with a laser. The result is perfectly flat and neat sided base that when painted you might not realise is wood.

I need to experiment how to recess holes part way through them though, I'm thinking clamping them and using some kind of flat-ish drill-bit, trying not to go right the way through. Do you do something similar with yours? Or is the top layer of the wood separate, so it can be drilled and then glued on?

The top portion of the base is cork sheet. I use a hole punch to make the spots for the figs. The two parts held together with spray adhesive, although the figs primed white (like the daemonettes) have their bases coming apart in the low humidity a bit. The hole punch only works for 2-3 pieces of cork at a time.

Dave does the drill thing with his litko. His first watching paint dry thread near the beginning talks about it.
