This follows a discussion Matt and I had last night after a game.

I'm curious to know why people play? Do you play to win money? Just to win? For the competition? The challenge? For a good game? For fun?

I also wondered if the reason for playing affected the way someone plays a game. Meaning, does it affect their army choice, how forgiving they are when it comes to the rules, suggestions to the opponent, etc.

Seriously though, thats a good question....
When I first started it was because the mini's looked so cool, the image on the front cover of WD108 just hooked me.
Nowadays? Mainly for the fun of it, win or lose doesn't matter as long as it's a giggle, but also partly for the challenge, which could be why my group has some mnany modifications to the rule-sets.. If we don't like it, or dont think it plays how we want... out it goes..

I play because I love to paint miniatures, and toss dice.

I play Epic, because the sight of a 6'x4' game of epic going on is a stunning sight. Your battlefield is almost 5x bigger, and thus the perspective of the "camera" zooms out, making your 28mm skirmishes have more of a context.

(former American football coach of the NY Jets for our non-US friends) I can't even remember what the reporter's question was, but it was something about the goal of the team for the game just finished (i.e. were you trying to win?), and hence pretty stupid

Actually, it's just a great video rather than a synopsis about why I play. Winning is the ideal goal. But, primarily, its to make a good showing/be competitive.

Nice, but there's a funny Zen thing in there too: play 'to win' too hard, and you find you begin to lose.

Maybe that's where Phil Jackson was coming from.

I'd say I play 'to play.'

For the sheer fun of playing games with friends.

I play Epic to impress the chicks.
