Pop quiz - what links the US and UK marine core ensignia?

If I had to guess without googling, I'd say the globe. Possibly an anchor

Or are you positing some sort of derivation rather than a thematic connection?
==

Edit: According to the insignia on Wikipedia, it's both a globe and an anchor.

I'm afraid I would only give 1/2 marks for that, but you are on the right lines with the globe - they of course don't show the whole globe but...

I'd give bonus marks on comments about battle honours!

The Pirate Coast, by Richard Zacks. An excellent book about the first Marines, Thomas Jefferson, and the war against the Tripoli pirates in 1805. It reads smoothly like fiction, yet is detailed and accurate.

Oddly enough, today is also the anniversary of the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald and my daughter's birthday.

I heard that on the radio this morning.

Happy 235th Birthday, USMC.

IIRC, the USMC globe shows the Western Hemisphere and the RM, the Eastern ... ;D I graduated from B.A.T. at Little Creek when I was with the 101 in '83. We would frequently cross-trained with the USMC, at one level or another ... Happy B-Day Jarheads ! :D ;D

I was waiting for L4 to turn up - still he missed why its a globe! At least according to my royal marine experience tour (no idea what else to call it as part of my navy induction) the relevant quote on battle honours is "From the difficulty of selecting any number of places to inscribe on these standards," he said, "your Sovereign has been pleased to give them 'the great globe itself' as their properest and most distinctive badge."
