No so much a table top wargame yet a wargame of sorts between me and my pc...

My main computer (with everything on it) seems to have decided to no longer cooperate. Wondering whether there was anyone on taccoms that could give us some advise as to what it could be.

I restarted my PC after being on for many days, and it failed to restart. When I turn it on, I get one beep, fans are active, yet the Screen goes to power save indicating to me that the pc is not booting past the initial beep.

I have tried with single RAM sticks and then swapping them around - no go
I have taken the battery out, and then placed it back after 10 mins (CMOS) - no go
I have taken off all drives bar the main HD and tried again - no go
There is no Windows boot up coming from the HD so I do not believe it has anything to do with the video card.

PC Specs
Chip: E6300
RAM - 2G
Video Card: 8600GT
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P

Anyone with any ideas or experience with the same?

Thanks in advance

Do you get the bios boot screen? It normally lists everything and if you press F1 (or similar) you can go into setup?

Also do you have the instruction book for the motherboard? Some have an LED display that shows numbers that show what the comp thinks is wrong.

No boot screen I am afraid

Also after the beep (or during), I get one yellow light and that was it. The book states that it may be CMOS hence why I removed the battery and then put it back again. Still no love however :(

Got any spare PSUs lying about?
Had a similar problem with a PSU one time, myself.

I do actually but with less power. I will try that next to see if I at least get a boot. :)

Replaced the PSU for no change
Also tested the old PSU on a PSU tester and got all Green lights so I know that works
Connected another drive as the main drive (just to get something different) for no change.

Total mystery to me...

do you POST at all? do you get anything at all on screen? Hard drive should not be needed for system to POST, so unlikely to be the problem.

Mobo giving 1 beep (if it does this normally on start up, cant find beep codes for that board) suggests that it is posting, but you are not seeing it on screen, thus graphics card?

If it does not normally give 1 beep, find out what 1 beep means.

If your not getting post it does sound like your motherboard is dead. How old is the pc?

Only positive is that the data on the disks is probably ok (no guarantees obviously)

Also I once had similar not-reaching-POST issues when building a pc, turned out I'd accidentally earthed the motherboard, and once properly positioned it worked fine.

Anything metal fallen between the Mobo and the case?

My PC did that once, many moons ago. Twas the motherboard at fault.

This comment worth what you paid for it, unfortunately.

Resolved (for now)

It was my 24" Dell monitor. The DVI connector appears to be stuffed and will not show the pc up. It was strange as the PC was not making any move to loading (speakers) either. I only found this out after plugging in the wrong monitor at the time (I run dual screens). Now I am on the 19" and it is really really small :P

After this problem (which involved looking at the CPU to make sure it was not fried), the PC started to turn off by itself. Appears that I did not have the CPU fan on correctly and it must have been overheating and shutting down

Well after a few more hours, I have rebulit the PC again and it appears to be working fine - just testing to see if it stays on after leaving it on for a few hours.

Good news is, I am still within the 1 year that I bought the monitor off Dell so they will no doubt get a call from me on Monday asking for a replacement :)

Thanks all for your help. The solution was something totally unexpected it appears...
