I am looking for recommendations.... again. I wonder if there is a game meeting what I am looking for. I would like a science fiction vehicle game - tanks, light vehicles and walkers mostly. In an ideal world, the game would focus on a couple of tanks/walkers or half a dozen light vehicles, at 28mm - 15mm scale. It would include customisation abilities, adding hardware, systems and weapons. It would be fairly detailed, and allow hits to knock down systems, etc. So... am I just dreaming here, or does a game like this actually exist?

I came up with some pretty good vehicle rules for Necromunda.

Thanks guys. I hadnt connected the dots to lead to Battletech, but it might do it I guess. I think that I wanted something a bit more tank-oriented and at a slightly smaller scale. I am familiar with both Wardogs and Heavy Gear. The Heavy Gear miniatures just dont do it for me so much. I cant remember, but are there rules for customisation/mecha building in HG? Wardogs is a game that I looked at when it was just in development on the MJ12 forums a couple of years ago. It seems OK, but it doesnt really have the granularity that I am looking for.

Its interesting that Necromunda was mentioned, as my first direction was Secrets of the Third Reich from Grindhouse. I hear that this is based on Necromunda... A couple of interesting suggestions. Thanks.

Thanks. Gear Krieg is linked to Heavy Gear (both DP9) and I will check that out too, thanks.

I am VERY aware of CAV, and I have two pretty big forces. I am a first edition player, and that does have construction rules. Its a fantastic and elegant system, but is really designed for larger scale encouters and is N-gauge.

Heavy Gear 1st edition (possibly second, NOT HGBlitz) does what you want it to:

Rules for building anything from a 1 ton dune buggy to a 30,000 ton ship, all in one consolidated form (you will want a good calculator for vehicle design, it plays with cube roots).

detailed, individualized, customizable vehicles that can still go BOOM from one hit.

I think the rules are still available from either RPGNow or DrivethruRPG. After all, you don't *have* to use the HG pieces.

This might seem like a weird suggestion but have you played Starmada at all? The game is fairly abstract and with basic movement system (option D1) I think it could do a very good job of a tank/tank game if you rename shields to armor. I thought it would work well for a a Mech game so I don't see why it wouldn't work well for tanks too.

If you add in critical damage (option E7 from the Rules annex) that hits everything on your list, there's no moral though so you'd have to house-rule that.

It's real strength is in its customization and simplicity, you can really do a lot with it. Basic rules and the shipbuilder are free:

I have to admit that I have avoided picking up space games recently (just dont want to be influenced by other rule books). I will check out Starmada as it is one of the space sets that I want to pick up anyway (along with Starfleet Battles.... and Attack Vector: Tactical). Many thanks. I will also need to research Heavy Gear. Initial research shows that vehicle construction was included in the first edition rule book, but was taken out of the second edition rule book and put into a suppliment book.

Thanks for all the recommendations, guys.

Wow, the Heavy Gear catalogue is a minefield! Is there a site anywhere that just has a list of all of the editions, with sub-lists for every book under each edition and basically what is in each book?

I am leaning towards second edition, but there are notes that the rules changed some parts in books related to first edition that didnt get updated, and additional suppliments covering rules sections that were in first edition but had been moved out to make room for other stuff added to the second edition core rules, etc!

All I want are all of the books that have any miniature rules under the first or second edition of Heavy Gear, and roughly what is in them.

Thanks.

I believe most of their catalog (past and present) is up on RPGNow:

http://www.rpgnow.com/index.php?cPath=122

For 2nd edition, the miniature related rules were "Heavy Gear Tactical", DP9's store has some old books with descriptions as well.

Also caught this on TMP last week:

Thanks. I bit the bullet at RPG Drivethru. I picked up PDFs of Heavy Gear second edition, and the Technical Manual second edition, for second edition! ;D

That should be OK to start with. Anything else that would be a good idea for me to pick up?

I played Heavy Gear a LOT before the newest, smaller version of the game. Blitz just didnt do it for me. The 2nd Edition Technical Manuals were AWESOME and I loved the art. That being said, Blitz still references most of the different loadouts of the gears, but their unique names were usually omitted (like the Crossbow Grizzly, the heavy Northern Gear with 4 Anti-Tank Missiles; it still exists but isnt called a Crossbow anymore.../whine).

I sold all my books for $50 USD on Ebay a few years back only because it wasnt getting played :P

I played Battletech for over ten years, from ages 14 to 25+something. Once I started discovering other games, I learned two things:
1. the random hit location chart SUCKED
2. basing a game off tonnage SUCKED

Those are why I wont go back, which is a shame.

So, I picked up Heavy Gear second edition and the Tactical Manual. Looking through, this seems to give me RPG rules and miniature rules in the core book, and more vehicle information and construction rules in the suppliment.

What is Heavy Gear Tactical? It looks like a boxed set as a miniature wargame. Does it include the rules that I already have as a tabletop game? Is there anything extra or different from what I already have?

Also, what else would be recommended for me to pick up based on what I already have? There are so many books - some for first edition which also work in second edition, some for second edition and some for Tactical....

Thanks.
