From a quick check they were taken by the top 2 IG lists at FSA (5th+7th) and the top list at Open War (1st).

One new player took 2 to the London event (finished bottom)
One regular player took a Baneblade Co. to FSA (finished 7/16)
One regular player took 2 Baneblades in a Co. to FSA (finished 5\16) and the same to Open War 13 (1\18)

Change in Skimmer pop-up rules? Makes Vultures less threatening than they used to be when they could shoot anything on the table with impunity?

Deathstrikes doesn't really surprise me. At 3000 pts, the guard list is very restrictive, you need every support slot you can afford. Deathstrikes really are just bait most of the time, given the choice between them and a Shadowsword that you'll actually get some use out of, I'd take the Shadowsword.

But what do I know.

2 Leman Russ companies and a Warlord don't work at 3,000 points? Or are you still not really sure ;)

The problem for Vultures is their cost. They are priced correctly IMHO, its just that you can get two formations of Thunderbolts or some artillery and an upgrade for the same points which do their thing every turn.

Deathstrikes are a must though for me - just for that deflated look your opponent gets when they fail their holofield save... >:D Also if your opponent is attacking them then they're not attacking a more important formation. I've had several experienced players ignore them totally as they are just two shots and not that much else.

I definatively would be more confident in a one day event than a weekend with them - you don't have to play all the other top lists hopefully and there is less chance of a bad commissar roll against an assault army screwing you - you are still screwed but then again you are int he weekend tourny as well.
