Recently I've been trying to get a handle on how many fan-made proxies there are available that were specifically designed for Epic. Based on all the pictures posted here (and thankfully saved to my hard drive before the boards went down a while ago), it looks like there are in the ballpark of 50+ distinct units that have been modeled and made available by various people here on this forum, covering [nearly] every army in the game, with more on the way. I think that is pretty damn impressive.

While proxies form other game system are all fine and good, I prefer models that clearly fit into the look and feel of the 40k/epic universe. So, knowing all that has been done and what is in the pipeline, I was wondering if there were particular units that you forum members think are in particular need of a good proxy. Are there any low-hanging fruits that you think could be easily converted from existing fan constructions? Are there any units that are currently available (or maybe were available long ago, but no longer) that you think are in serious need of an update?

I'm not volunteering or anything, I'm just curious to see what people think. I think this will also be useful for people who haven't kept up with what all has been done. I realize people might not feel comfortable discussing what they are currently working on for various reasons, but I figure as long as the discussion is theoretical and involves units that noone is actually working on, then we're in the clear. If not, then someone can make this thread go away.

Personally, I'd like to see a deathwheel and some chaos bikes.

People will say chaos war engines. These same people will then fail to provide any ideas for how they should be re-imagined, it will be forgotten again, and the next time the subject comes up they will ask for chaos war engines again.

Death wheels are very easy to make from tracks and bases.

:D

Not much point doing tzeentch/slaaneshi as FW will redo at some point anyway.

Aside from that it seems to be plague towers/catapults/khorne engines but new/bigger/redesigned/remote controlled :P

Re: chaos war engines

The SHT (decimator?) can easily just be a turret swap conversion kit (or perhaps based on the malcador chassis with chaos icons on it).

And sure, the death wheel can be made from bases and some 40k tracks, but I think that usually looks too bulky. Even if a fan-made CG deathwheel was simply made based on that description, it would be better than a simple conversion because it would have detail of the appropriate scale, which is hard to do when using 40k parts.

I think the plague tower is good as-is, it just isn't available anymore, so an updated copy would please most people. I also think a plague tower bears a passing resemblance to an IG leviathan, so one could be base off the other, if either one is ever done.

Lesser brass scorpions can use parts from defilers, with just the main body needing a new part (if that). The other Khornate engines could easily use existing IG chassis (chimeras and/or russes) with skull turrets and other icons. A cauldron of blood can look somewhat like a hellhound (the FW one with the one large tank), and a doom-blaster can be based of an IG artillery tank.

Slaaneshi kinghts and titans are a bit tricky, but again updated copies would probably work. The rest of the titans can just be corrupted versions of the AMTL parts, which is a process that has been done before for smaller vehicles.

In any case, I'm not necessarily asking how a particular part could be done, I'm just wondering where the holes are.

Also, any of you that have them, post up some concept art if you want.

I think the evil elves are awaiting the imminent release of their 28mm scale forms.

In all seriousness, Chaos War Engines do not need to be done as there is enough proxy material out there to make ones own. Although I own all my Daemon Engines, if I did not, I would make them out of Land Raider bodies etc. and they would all be unique - and therefore better than the GW produced ones.

What we do need are selections of cannons, guns, bitz, claws etc to make custom items. If there was a sprue that caterred for all that was cool in gunnery and weapons that could be affixed to any model, that would be really cool.

Apart from that, Chaos Bikers and Chaos Jump Assault Troops would be a very good thing to have.

Dark Eldar are a must I would think - at least to have minis for some of their more 'signature' units.

That's all I can think of or agree on right now ;)

The forum policy is that making threads asking what proxies people would like to see modelled in 3d isn't allowed. They tend to be deleted by us mods...after a week or two.

Personally I think some Evil Elves in Spaaace would be awsome. There's a few holes in the Non Ordered list that still needs plugging, but my spider senses tell me that close proxies are in the works for most of these, unless of course you want a 100% replica of a larger miniature.
Generally speaking I'd be more interested in new designs for stuff that didn't previously exist rather than remakes of discontinued models. After all these old models are still available, if hard to come by. Also, stuff that is difficult to convert takes higher priority than stuff that is easily converted in my book. I am not at all interested in updated versions of currently available stuff - even if the quality is better. Partly because I already got what I need; partly because that is a whole different kettle of fish in terms of copyright - at least morally. Hence I think Evil Elves would be much more interesting than more non-ordered stuff. This would include infantry, LVs, vehicles, flyers, superheavies etc.

Angry robot vehicles, would also be good I think.

Here's a bit of official concept art making the rounds since this weekend's USGD.
