What might help here, is if someone were to do an Example using Imperial Guard terminoligy basing it on a nations army.

EG:

Squad - 11 IG, split into 2 fire teams
Platoon - 44 IG, split into 4 Squads

Etc, including tanks and APCs....

Or in Epic terms:

One stand equals one team.
Two stands = Squad.
An IG platoon can be six to ten stands (3 to 6 squads, including platoon command squad) strong.
An IG company can be 14 to 74 stands (2 to 6 platoons, including company command squad) plus up to 18 heavy weapon stands (teams).

This includes neither any attached specialist teams like Ratling Snipers or Ogryn CC troops, nor any vehicle assets (tanks, artillery etc.) more or less temporarily seconded to the company since these don't belong to the basic organisation.

The number of platoons in a company etc. are taken from the first edition Codex: Imperial Guard for WH40k v.3.

OK, thanks. I guess (to add to the confusion) it also depends on whether we are talking about Marines or IG. In Epic:A a Marine formation seems to be a platoon, but for the Guards with more troops it may be a company. Does this sound right? Anyway, I think that my Marines will be organised into platoons.

Just to throw more confusion out there, does anyone have any information about the ancient Samurai military organisation?

Yes, Ratlings, Ogryn, AFVs, etc. would be attached to a Company at Platoon strength (about 4-6 stands or more, or 3-5 AFVs). And SMs units usually are smaller than IG as far as total numbers go. ?But the organization levels remain the same. ?3-4 Plts to a Co., 3-4 Co. to a Bn, etc., etc. ?I don't have Samurai but I listed Roman Legions in the Blood Angels post. ?:)

You are right -a Marine detachment is most likely a (reinforced) platoon. As marine organisation is much more flexible they can form smaller battle groups than IG.

Unfortunately not.  :(  However, I am in the process of ordering a few books on the subject. I'll let you know when I get those.  :)

Yes we use SM1 TO&Es, which are very close to actual military organizations, as I have said. And generally SM units are smaller, an example is SM Cos. have 3 Plts of 2-4 Sqds, where IG Cos. are 2-4 Plts of 5-9 Fire Teams.  And I'd be interested to see how Samurai/Nippon forces  were organized in the 19th Century.  However, Japanese units in WWII were generally organized like Western Armies.

I did a little hunting around (on the web and the various wargames sites) for Roman, Egyptian, Chinese and Samurai military organisation, with disappointing results.

The Roman organisation is based around the cohorts (too large) and the century (sounds strange in todays climate).

The Egyptians were only just forming a cohesive battle formation and still split troops by type. They did divide their forces into four groups, named after four of their gods.

The Chinese dont seem to have any information out there in web-land. I suspect because they didnt have a strict military organisation and just massed their troops together.

The Samurai basically worked in very small, private guard formations, without real named structure.

So, it looks like my Marines are organised in Platoons then...

Yes, well a Cohort is 6 Centuries and a Century is about 80-100 men, so a Cohort is generally accepted as a current Bn. And a Century a Co. ?My SMs, again based on SM1 templates, are organized as I said 3 SM Plts per Co., 3 Cos. per Bn, with 3 Bn Cbt Spt Dets. and a Bn Transport Pool for Rhinos, L/Raiders and Razorbacks. ?Plts are not normally separate, they are part of a Co, and a Co is part of a Bn. ?So when you say you are going to organize your SMs in a Plts, my response is yes, and you'll have IG Plts too, these are organizations based on smaller units combined to make large units of combined arms forces. ?For example, my Co in the 101 had 3 Rifle Plts, a Mortar Plt and an HQs Plt. ?As far as Samurai, I thought that same thing, that's why I mentioned Nippon Forces, they began to organize like western armies around the mid-19th century, IIRC. ?T. Cruise has a movie loosely based on that coming out this month, amazingly called "The Last Samurai" ! ? ? ? :o ?

Yes. The Last Samurai has caused quite a debate on the 'SoA ancmed' group. The upshot is that Cruise is about the only person short enough to play a Japanese of that era!  :;):

Well they can chill out ... Tom C. plays an ACW vet hired by a Warlord (?) to train his forces in western tactics.  So he's playing a Yankee in an ocean of Nipponese !

Hi!

Japanese unit organization is very "hodge-podge", since it depends on the house they served and the scale of the conflict. Also remember the bulk of the forces were "ashigaru" or spearmen, basically peasant levies.

Japanese battle were basically "brawls" with little tactical savy, so much in fact when the first mongol invasion ocurred the mongols slaughtered the japanese forces since they had no real organization or tactics. If it wasn't for the famous "divine wind" and other very bad weather events that thwarted the exploitation of the inital success, JApan would have been easily conquered by the mongols.
