Hi guys. There have been a couple of posts which have bordered on political discussions emerging here recently. In a perfect world, this would not be a problem. However, some topics are best steered clear of.
This kind of thing leads to heated discussions and strong opinions on all sides, and the chance of changing anyones mind are minimal. Therefore, please avoid topics relating to political situations, national opinions, the right/wrong of a war, etc.
I would not try to stop any discussion of battle, we are on a wargaming site, but please just be a bit careful. Mods should check posts and censor or let me know of any posts which may offend or start discussions with no real resolution.
I ask for a state of calm in these difficult times, and some self moderation.
Thanks.

I agree completely and we should always keep it civil.

CS,
I've also noticed and been tempted to act, but the new guidelines have me acting "laissez faire."
I probably should have E-mailed you about a few of those.
Of course, then again, I really don't want to deal with "censorship" issues again.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

@ Maksim
Maksim, I don't have a problem with your methods as a moderator, I never have. I often tend to get carried away, so I am personally letting you know that if you see the need to remove or remove portions of my posts, feel free.
@ CS
Sorry dude, will be more restrained in future , you know me - I think it, I say it .

If I said I didn't still harbor a few ill feelings over the last moderator spat then I'd be lying. Since I'm no good at lying (the crooked eyebrow gives me away...), I should stay with my trademark of being forward and honest.
I was "moderator-ing" a lot and enjoying it (Oh, the relief of spelling... ) and I haven't minded cutting back, but even with the guidelines, I'm still a little hesitant to act on some things.
My sense of humor tends to be black (as in sad and wry humor) and a little conservative.
Having said that, A lot of the "humour" and "political" posts seem kind of "out there" to me.
A lot of the anatomical discussion has also seemed pretty "far out."
CS,
How do you feel about these topics (politics, humour, anatomy)?
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

No worries.
Our little inequities here are pretty low-key on life's list of problems.

As the offender who started most of those posts, I would like to point out that they started off as humour threads...
I agree that one was going awry, but most were not and I think the thread closure was overdone a bit in response to the 1 about global terrorism.
This is a flame free and happy forum, but most of the OT threads were blokes just having a chat about stuff in general and some of the weird aspects of life. I thought most of them quite funny and as I only come to this forum in preference to others, it is interesting (and sometimes predictable) to see others replies and comment. If you get offended- dont go back to that topic ...it seems a simple solution rather than this current trend of crushing threads.
Having said that, I'm glad I'm not a moderator and thank you for the time you do doing it Maksim.

Tas,
As the offender who started most of those posts, I would like to point out that they started off as humour threads... |
I don't think of you as an "offender."
The difficult thing about humour is that one person's humour is another's offense.
I agree that one was going awry, but most were not and I think the thread closure was overdone a bit in response to the 1 about global terrorism. |
Sorry about being overdone. Getting the exact right amount of response is really hard to do. The nature of the beast is that different people have different expectations and it's just plain hard to get "just right" for everyone. It reminds me of Goldilocks.
This is a flame free and happy forum, but most of the OT threads were blokes just having a chat about stuff in general and some of the weird aspects of life.. ?
I tend to agree and just ignore most of the odder stuff. I was in the military once too and understand that the martial lifestyle leads to some odd humour.
I thought most of them quite funny and as I only come to this forum in preference to others, it is interesting (and sometimes predictable) to see others replies and comment.
Some of them I find funny and others a bitter reality.
If you get offended- don't go back to that topic... it seems a simple solution rather than this current trend of crushing threads.
This works for me.
I don't know about this whole moderator thing. I'm probably going to be ready to pass on the "privelege" soon because I'd rather be one of the "boys" again rather than one of the guys keeping the place from going overboard. I don't like the idea of leaving CS with most of the buck though. He does an outstanding job for us.
Having said that, I'm glad I'm not a moderator and thank you for the time you do doing it Maksim.
You're welcome. I appreciate the nice sentiments. The job is mostly thankless.
Some people get angry at you for not doing enough and others for doing too much. It's a "no-win" situation.
Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Quote (MaksimSmelchak @ 26 2003 Nov.,19:51) | CS,
How do you feel about these topics (politics, humour, anatomy)?
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. | In general, I am fairly broad-minded and will talk about pretty much anything. However, I do have to think about the boards in general.
I would appeal for a little understanding from the members of these boards. There may be threads that are closed or restricted which you cannot understand. However, everyone has a different opinion, so if you dont agree with certain action please either just let me know or live with it. This is particularly true of the General Discussion area.
We have to be aware of a number of issues, that there are members here from a huge number of countries, ethnic backgrounds and religions (and that is actually something that I am very proud of). What I have absolutely no problem with may be extremely offensive to a middle-aged housewife from southern US with two young children.
I felt that the 'Girls...' thread was becoming a little close to the mark, and posted this. This is a board dealing with a game, and we have to be aware that minors visit here.
Politically, I have no problem discussing things, however I have seen too many discussions drop to a stalemate, and I would rather stop these before lines are drawn and people form groups according to political ideas or past disagreements.
Humour topics are fantastic, and I loved all of Tas' posts. I even considered sending the one on the French military might to a French friend of mine, but he is very critical of his own race.
This will always be a difficult situation. In general we should all be aware that this area of the boards is one dedicated to general discussion. This means that there are no real rules, but at the same time this area is not the reason for the boards existing.
I would hope that we could continue with the mature discussions, realising that this is an open forum. If anyone wants proof of the fact that even the simplest discussions which go towards a political nature can be 'heated' are urged to visit the Portent forums, Political and Religious boards.
In the end, these boards are guided by myself and a number of moderators. We are individuals with various opinions and ideas. If there is ever anything that people are not happy, please feel free to PM me and discuss it.
I would really hate to see this type of thing sour these boards. If there is a choice between the wonderful banter and good natured discussion which is current and none of this type of thread, and a bad feeling in the background with no restrictions, what would people prefer?
