Sorry guys ... I can be so insensitive ! ?Anyway, here we go for future reference: ?Squad = Sqd. - 11-13 men, Platoon = Plt. - 40-50 men, Company = Co. - 100-200 men, Battalion = Bn. - 600-1000, Regiment = Rgt. - 1100-3200. ?Brigade = ?Bde. - 2000-4000. ?Division = Div. - 9000-20,000. ?That's enough for today. ?But you get the idea. The numbers vary based on time period and army. ?For example, the 101 ABN in WWII had about 9000 men, but now closer to 15,000. Or a US Army Sqd. is 11 where a USMC Sqd. was 13. ?So Please feel free to ask if I ramble on about stuff ... ?

Hi!
I think Chapter of 10 battalions would have been more credible, at least the total force would be in the millions. Theres just no way that such a high attrition rate can be sustained by one million men across the WHOLE galaxy.
Then again, perhaps REGIMENTS making up a chapter is even more realistic given the casualty rate.

Agreed, 10 Bns would be a Div. of 3 Rgts or 3 Bdes of 3 or 4 Bns each would be much more logical and realistic. 10 Bns make up the standard full strength US Div.

Hi!
I think they may have envisioned chapters more like roman legions, although they'd still be understrength numerical compared to one.
I'd like to know who cmae up with chapters of 1000 marines.....

Yup, more like romans. I think I agree here. Problem is that the battles they have envisioned would have considered the whole roman army in its stronguest hour as a slightly understrength recon squad.
Health and a lot of sixes,
Xavi

Well with an attitude like that you can just give back your Eagle standard and Leopard skin ceremonial dress Legionaire Xavi!

Hi!
Agreed, the concept is of a legion, but the sheer scale of the conflicts make a million man SM force a mere spit in the bucket for the size of the Imperium.
There was a quote in the old books that 100 marines were worth 1000 of any other troops. So at a ratio of 10 to 1 the SM are hopelessly few. For the Imperium to function, I think they need no less than one billion space marines.

I assume you mean one million SM PER CHAPTER, Primarch
And well, there you have my pelt. Quoting a funky actor you have there in the states, you will only take my eagle pole from my cold hands, though
lol

Hi!
No, one billion total, along all chapter, as a minimum. But I agree, it should be one million PER chapter. Thats a lot more effective.
Then again thats how the horus heresy was possible, chapter too big under the control of one person.

Yes, a Roman Legion is what I think they were going for. However a Legion was about the size of a Div., IIRC ?

I agree with u that they designed them after Roman Legions but....
you're forgeting an importent factor the only reason the space marines won so much is that they have discpline comething tha Romans had and for example something the orks don't have.
There is one instance where a Roman general with only 10 Cohorts (I think thats the correct spelling not sure thougth) thats 1,000 beating a army of 100,000 thats the equivelent of one Roman infantry man comparing to 100 of there men
Seeing these figures. thougth i still don't support the chaptors being so small. It does bring into perspective that it is possible for space marines to do this even more so considering there superhuman

Huns, Goths, Vandals and Mongols weren't very disciplined either and look at the Havoc they caused over the course of History...

A Cohort is 6 Centuries, and a Century is a 100 men. So a Cohort is equal to a modern Bn. Organization and discipline is the hallmark of high quality units as opposed to disorganized mobs of thugs. When organization and discipline fail the large numbers of thugs with weapons may prevail. Huns, Goths, Vandal or Orks ... are about the same !
