If you have a formation, say a tactical detachment, and you add a dreadnought and a chaplain upgrade are you allowed to have the character in the dreadnought? Or are you restricted to only adding characters to the original basic part of a formation?

I think you can add them anywhere but I'm not certain, so thought I'd make sure.

A Dreadnought Chaplain is a legal option

I didn't think it was allowed Glyn.

Infact, I'm almost certain that somewhere in the rulebook (don't have it in front of me as at work) in the description of the character upgrade it states that it can only be applied to units from the formation, and not any units that are bought as upgrades (so ruling Dreadnoughts out).
I might have dreamed that but will check later.

That is stated in some army lists, but I don't think it's specifically stated in the Space Marines list.

Plus, it's not like a Chaplain Dreadnought would be overpowered. Just really cool.

Pretty sure you can add them...though in the spirit of the rules I usually wouldn't: I thinks it's a bit of an oversight in the design ...
That said if you modelled something like said chaplain dreadnough or chose to put a supreme commander in a reinforced armoured land raider (modelled as whatever the hell the command land raider is) for example, i'd say go for it :-)

Yeah, if someone had made one I'd gladly play against it, but I'm fairly certain it's explicity not allowed in the rule book.

Since there is no "order of operations" when it comes to adding upgrades to a formation, upgrade characters may be added to any unit in the formation, including other upgrades.  (I'm found of Commissar led Ogryns myself!)

Some army list specifically restrict you, so that limitation would be in play to prevent this at times, e.g., Eldar Exarchs may only be added to Aspect Warrior units.

Tangentially, the question arises when a character "upgrade" is already included in the core units of a formation, e.g., Chaos Space Marine Lord characters or *some* Necron Lords; since they are purchased before upgrades are added there may be confusion, but, I believe the usual intent is that they must be added to a core unit before anything else is added.

Necron Lords

They at least specifically note that they can only be added to certain unit types.

Chaplain Dreadnought was just an example (though I would like to model and use one eventually), I just figured the characterrules would be the same across lists, but maybe not.

The actual usage I had in my was sticking a LaTD Icon Bearer in a Chaos Spawn unit for protection and fearlessness. I always take a couple of Chaos Altars, but am considering trying greater demon summoning in a forward garrisoned formation as well for demon-bomb fun and it's important to keep the Demonic-Focusser alive. Chaos Spawn being especially chaotic it seems appropriate for an Icon Bearer to join them too, especially Tzeentch which I'd probably use.

The Black Legion army list explicitly states that the Chaos Lord character can only be added to the core units in the formation and not to any that are part of an upgrade.

It's similar to Commissar Ogryns though, only this is a 65 point unit rather than 25 and since they're allowed seems ok here too. If the formation should be wiped out by combat resolution/ then the main use of Spawn is keeping a survivor alive with Fearless anyway, by which point leader is mostly superfluous.

Well Chaplain Dreadnoughts exist in Wh40k (at least in Forgeworlds books).
And Ogryn Squads are sometimes led by a Commissar.
