I don't see it as adding another special rule, just as clarifying the one we already have:

Either of these will work, depending on what people decide:

Quote:

Any formation that is in the reserves, either because it has not entered play or because it has left the board for any reason, may enter play via a portal as part of an activation that allows movement. Units entering play via a portal should measure their movement from the center of the portal as their starting point. A formation in the reserves that fails to activate may not enter play via a portal.

... as their starting point. A formation in the reserves that fails to activate must move as part of its hold action to enter play via a portal.

IMHO a formation off board which fails it's activation to enter the board through a portal/wraithgate/etc just gains a BM and can do nothing else for the turn apart from the Rally roll at the end of the turn.

By the way: a Tomb complex is the Blitz objective on your side of the table.  If they have that covered for most of the game, then you are doing something wrong.

This assumes a lot, Corey.  Sometimes you just get outplayed, sometimes things don't work out the way you want.  Sometimes you -gasp- decide not to take the tomb complex.  And you're missing the point; this is about what happens at a specific moment in a part of a game, not over the long term.

Quote:

You can't compare Planes with ground units, because planes have a specific order which covers them in these situations:  Stand Down.

And troops do too: it is called a HOLD action which can be a move, shoot, or regroup.  Mechanically this is the same; in other words there is always a default action that is taken no matter what.

Either that, or you are talking about adding yet another special rule, not just to the Necrons but to every portal using army as well.

No, its a clarification to a rule just like Dave suggested above.  And it has never been resolved as far as I know.  This is just necessary to clarify more for the Necrons because of the nature of the army.

Quote:

Or, it can be a simple rule, that has some potentially harsh consequences when you fail.  Just like everyone else who fails a critical activation role.

Or you could Marshal out of the portal and automatically pass your activation.

You are oversimplifying again and not taking into account that certain things can still go wrong.  What if your formation off board has BMs and you try to retain with a marshall action.  You don't automatically activate so you still fail.

Quote:

Either way, if all of you were playing it the wrong way, and avoiding this potentially harsh situation, it makes me wonder how many other downsides haven't been played properly and have skewed people's view of the army's relative power.

Your concern is unwarranted.  If you re-read Zombocom's and my posts, you can see we never played this way because it never came up before.  But now that BMs are being retained on formations off board after rallying the situation is cropping up.  The mechanics were never played incorrectly because the rules washed BMs away and made failing activations impossible.

Just realize this is not a exclusively Necron problem but it needs to be decided.

Aircraft that fail stand down (ie: do nothing), what's the problem with slapping this mechanic on off-board formations that fail to activate? They don't hold, they just fail to activate. You can re-roll it if you've got the SC re-roll still, otherwise, it's your opponents turn to activate.

I haven't considered all of the ramifications, but this seems like a simple solution to me.

this is probably the best choice. necron players don't have to send there troops out to get slaughtered and opponents don't have to worry about us shedding BMs off board. we would just have to see if this works for eldar

I should have stopped this earlier, but I didn't expect things to get this derailed.
Let's continue the conversation here.
