Every year Salute rolls round and I'm... in a different country, at a wedding, trapped under a pile of masonry etc etc. You would think being a handful of miles from the place I could manage to get there?

I am simultaneously encouraged and shamed by the quality of my terrain versus that in the pics.

I love Salute.

Every so often we mull around the idea of taking a display board for Epic to Salute and just gaming all day to show off our awesome game.

No idea about how you go about getting permission to do such a thing though.

Every year since they left Kensington Town Hall Salute has got a little bit more soulless to me.

I know they had to move due to sheer numbers, but it now just feels like a massive hanger 2/3rds full of stands. The number of retailers offering show specials has taken a massive dive in the last 2 years and for the first time I'm actually considering not going to Salute and just meeting up the people I normally attend with and go to the pub! Spent far longer in the pub last year compared to the show.

I'd say that the actual number of retailers, total, has gone down in the last couple of years.

Just email warlord, say what you want to do and you are in. personally I think a combined simple participation game on one board and a display game on the other is a better bet. Can carry adverts for all our companies (DRM, EW, Otter, E&C, etc) as well to hand to people :)
I will cheerfully pitch in to such an effort (having done so for others in the old venue), but I have to be in the bloody country! :)

DRM have had a display at the last 2 Salutes, if not longer.

I do not have a company. Yet.

DRM do attend with a nice display board.

Yeah Man of Kent has been talking about organising something like this too, with a few of us getting together with our very best painted armies for a huge set piece display battle. I'd be happy to help, in time, once I have stuff painted to be able to.

Having bought a couple of sets of the Fortress of Absolution scenery to heavily convert to a set of massive epic city walls and vast marine angel statue tower buildings I'm tempted to suggest a huge siege game. Chaos marines, LatD assaulting Imperial Guard, Marines, with Titans on both sides and hopefully all really nicely painted models and scenery.

I have been going to Salute every year for at least the last five years, and with DRM for the last two or three. I strongly suspect that DRM will be there again in 2010, and that I will be putting on a larger, more serious Hostile Stars demo/participation game.

It really is a great event, and one where the entire community steps out and produces some truely fantastic stuff.

I believe, if you wanted to run a demo game, you would just do what DRM does, and book a table, pay the fee and turn up with the relevant stuff on the day. Its not difficult, you just need the up front cash, and the ability to transport the game board to the venue, preferrably in a rental van. Excel is a better venue for this as you can just drive right into the hall. It does cause traffic jams around the toilets!

Anecdotally, a lot of conventions have seen a drop in numbers over the last couple of years, mainly due to the recession. This kind of event can be very expensive for a small company. Not just the act of physically getting there and setting up, but making sure you have the displays painted up, van hire, hotels sometimes, and maybe even closing the store for the weekend. If footfall numbers are down as well, its no wonder that companies wonder on the return of these events.

We usually have fliers on the table, and have memorised the route to the nearest DRM retailer! Hopefully, we are fairly close, although some years we are at the opposite ends of the hall!

Plus there was a government tax change making these events far more expensive to run.

You only have to pay for running a game at Salute if you're a retailer. Clubs and gaming groups just have to book their space - its these kind of games that draw the punters in. So Salute makes its money off those selling at the event, not those volunteers who make it a great show.

Cool I think we should try and get an Epic game or two on display at the next event.
