After getting the same advice both from Jonluke and a chap at Forgeworld, I've taken to making one piece moulds that I then cut into to create mould planes. I've also taken to building some mould planes into single piece moulds using selotape.

A scalpel, or failing that, a stanley knife. Scalpels are easier to manipulate deep into the mould however.

so, not a big sharp chef's knife then? how do you manage a straight cut? Also, are you using a clear mould material?

The cut doesn't need to be straight, only careful. You can make the mould line do fun stuff like go around corners, or split off in multiple directions, etc.

Nope, though that would make things easier.

Sprayed the cast with White primer then ran a quick Devlan Mud wash over it.

As you can see, the model is basically identical to the FW-produced one on the right... in fact I'd say it's a bit better if only because before making the mould I removed that lump that the original FW models have under their left leg (which can be seen on the example on the right).
