Tanks wise in general I've always seen their relative worth out of the rulebook as Annihilators 275, Destructors 250, Vindicators slightly worse than Destructors sometimes. Though this is skewed by the option to landing craft them which serves the Vindicator well. certainly 200 is too cheap as they are not that bad, merely not optimised in a useful way and slow.

Making tacticals cheaper is a good move IMO.

Would it not also be helpful to put landing craft and thunderhawks into the 1/3 aircraft/ titan allowance?

Agreed, I have always thought that's where they should be.

I would use Thunderfire Cannons instead of Thudd Guns. You could still use the old Thudd Gun model to represent Thunderfire Cannons.

My standard Air Assault list:

Tactical- 6x 1xChaplain. 1xDread- Power fist. 400
Tactical- 6x 1xLibrarian. 2xDread- Twin lascannon. 2xVindicator. 1xHunter. 625 BTS
Devastator- 4x 1xSupreme Commander. 350
Devastator- 4x 250
Scout- 4x 1xRazor- Twin lascannon. 175
Terminators- 4x 1xChaplain. 400
Landspeeder- 5x 200
Thunderhawk Gunship- 200
Thunderhawk Gunship- 200
Strike Cruiser- 200

3000pts

It has a mix of ground support units (Scouts, Speeders, BTS), air assault (usually Tactical with Chaplain) and Drop Pods (sometimes Devastators) and a teleport attack.
It is the most flexible list I've wrote taking full advantage of the Marine special rule to swop foot/Rhino/Drop Pod/Thunderhawk for many of the units.
The option is there for all but the Gunships and Strike Cruiser to start on the ground as mechanised/foot troops- but I'll admit I've never felt that was the smart choice in game.

Skaros list:

Tactical- 6x 1xChaplain. 1xDread- Power fist. 350
Tactical- 6x 1xLibrarian. 2xDread- Twin lascannon. 2xVindicator. 1xHunter. 575 BTS
Devastator- 4x 1xSupreme Commander. Thudd Guns. 390
Devastator- 4x 250
Scout- 4x 1xRazor- Twin lascannon. 150
Terminators- 4x 1xChaplain. 350
Landspeeder- 5x 175
Thunderhawk Gunship- 300
Thunderhawk Gunship- 300
Thunderbolt Fighters- 150

2990ts

The Strike Cruiser is gone, which puts a stop to my Drop Pod assault, the Devastators will take on a ground-based roll. The Supreme Commander hiding near the Blitz, using Indirect to help the rest of the army by putting BM on target formations.
Not sure about the other Dev's- I may fiddle around with pts to get a Predator formation instead.

The Teleport attack is equally thwarted. The Terminators will go in the 2nd Thunderhawk giving me two air assaults (the other being the Tactical with Chaplain).

The rest will act as before, protecting home objectives with Scouts and BTS. Landspeeders supporting an air assault.

You have done a good job with the pts in that the extra points gained by my cheaper Termies, Scouts, Tactical, Speeders is eaten up by the more expensive Thunderhawks.

Just chipping in briefly to say I find myself nodding with a lot of what Stimulate Knave has been saying here and will be interested to see how this develops and testing out a more ground focussed marine list at some point in the (not that near) future. Lets all try and keep things friendly though, see the debate has got slightly heated.

Only other comment is I do think it would be much better to add Thunderfire Cannon in instead of Thud Guns or Mole Mortars. Those aren't really cannon for Marines these days and have been replaced by the former. There's no Thunderfire model yet, but I'm sure given time one may see the light of day, particularly if it's used in more in game.

As Nealhunt once point out to me, 'cannons' are things you put on boats.

'canon'  :)

That addresses the 'usual' build, Thunderhawks or Warhounds Sir?

I really like the ideas here tinkering around with some of the other options that no-one 'competitive' seems to go for (like Tacs and Predators, 300 point no-teleport termis are starting to sound like a half-decent garrison formation to me (add a couple of Dreads and maybe a Hunter for a decent BTS too).

A whole new world of possibilities opens up  :)

I wrote this awhile back when the old Mud Marine topic was warming up...

Which version of the thread, I can remember at least half a dozen since I joined up here, maybe more.  :)

Heck, I may have even started one of them.

EDIT: Damn link only shows the main page. Look under Wh40k -> Armies -> Space Marines -> Heavy Support. They call it Thunderfire Cannon, not Canon :)

I've only caused confusion. :)

Cannons are large guns that shoot.

Canon is a term used to refer to refer to something that is considered to be "genuine".
