I've finally got off my rump and began modeling up a bio tank, with the intent of casting up a line of 6mm bio-army figs.

I'm currently working on a "base" model for a bio-tank, in which you would plug in various arm and leg sets to create different units.





This is my first attempt at creating a model for 3d printing, and first organic character in a long long time.

Thoughts / comments?

Looks good. So, what size is this planned to be?

This one will be the size of a 'nid bio-tank, I also plan to make infantry and super heavy sized creatures.

SO wait...you gonna have it 3d printed first and then cast it yourself? Sounds interesting! We've got some people trying to do that too, so I'm definitely keeping my eyes on your project to see how that will go!

Got some more finished on this bugger - the carapace armor is nearly complete - still need to add details, but it's getting there.





As for casting, I'm not entirely clear on how to go about producing the actual models, but I know there's posts on these boards that go into detail as to how to do it.  As well as some very talented folks who have seen a project like this to conclusion, so hopefully, with these resources I can blunder through it.

Very interesting to see the stages as this project moves along. I shall be watching with...well, interest.

i like the concept of being able to plug in the pieces you want to make the variants or tank types you need. makes for alot of options and even a cheaper format for collecting which is always a good option.

Will be watching with interest.

I'm very interested in seeing how this progresses. The design concepts you are planning on (multiple leg options) is a very cool idea.

The body style is different, but familiar, and therefore works well with how we visualize Tyranids. I do have to say that the face isn't working for me. In profile it looks too cartoonish, almost Orkian. I think if you are going to go this far, you might consider a different style of face...or this just popped into my head, instead of what look like fangs, how about feeder tentacles? Actually, that just might work with what you have.

Otterman - I'm using 3DsMax.  I use it everyday at my job, creating less interesting things for an architecture firm

Honda - Haven't considered the feeders...That could be interesting.  

I was actually thinking about making the facial features less prominent, seeing as how big the creature is, it makes sense that his perceptive organs would actually remian small in relation to it's body.  If you look at the old trygon or dormanatrix, you'll see what I mean - the head is actually small and rather featureless, and it makes for an interesting look.

Someone told me that all tyranids have the same number of plates on their head (5, I think).

Anyway, you might want to keep that in mind.

Also, the rounded edges between the carapace plates make it look cuddly. Maybe sharper looking edges would look a bit more threatening. Some goes for the back knobs.

semajnollissor - I don't want to get too close to the nid design for legal reasons.  The goal is to keep my guys just similar enough to the nid "look", but not too similar.

That said, the plates still need some detail added - there will be lots of tiny spikes and bumps to help rough it up a bit.
