Finally got to take some pics of my tournament army that I finished painting 3am right on the deadline the night before Heavy Bolter 2009- I placed second last but I won best painted ;-) I blame lack of sleep for the second last placing... surely has nothing to do with lack of gaming talent....

I rushed the hierophants a bit, but the colour scheme is all coherent so I am still happy!

Great army there.

What were the Skyth medium beasties counting as? and were did you get the objective markers from?

That's a fantastic colour scheme dude, really nice.  I'm looking at a more 'hazard/warning' scheme for my brood but that naturalistic scheme is very nice, maybe enough to turn me!

Can you detail your painting method? Looks fairly wash-based on the flesh, very artfully done mind!

Congrats on the prize too!

The Skyth couns as Haruspex (never liked the oldies), The objective markers are found on the 40K genestealer sprues I believe. I must get one of the larger McCragge Synapse node bits soon.

Here is the paint scheme- most of it is copy and pasted from Moloch who painted the Tyranids in Imperial Armour 4, but with some comments from me on using modern paints at the end.
For the little bug carapace and skin, i skipped over a few steps to save time

""Here`s how the Ouroboros `nids were painted using -bar one exception- GW only colours :

1. Black Primer
2. Basecoat Bubonic Brown
3. Flesh Wash over the whole model
3. maybe. Bubonic Brown Drybrush

then the carapace
1. Basecoat Catachan Green
2 First Highlight 2:1 Bleached Bone / Havanna Brown (non GW paint - bestial brown plus a hint of Codex Grey would do the same)
3 Highlight in Rotting Flesh
4 thinnned mix from water+Catachan Green+Rotting Flesh/watery consistence
5 last Highlight in Rotting Flesh
6 Spine sepereated with Black (Genestealers only)

body
1 first, very harsh Highlight in Rotting Flesh
2 thinned mix of Bubonic Brown+Rotting Flesh (very unusual technique)
3 Last Highlight Bleached Bone

Tongue
1 Dwarf Flesh
2 First Highlight Dwarf Flesh + Elf Flesh
3 Second Highlight Elf Flesh

Claws
1 Basecoat Rotting Flesh
2 First Highlight Rotting Flesh + White
3 Second Highlight White

The Carapace and Skin were done using quite unusual techniques which fly in the face of conventional painting wisdom (Katja usually even uses really thick paints >shrug<).
I would strongly advise to use "normal" techniques with the same colours, meaning: less washes, more layers.
The main thing is to get the overall chalky hue about right.

Someone else used the same scheme to grab a Golden Demon last year in the UK, so it is doable."
__

What I did was follow that, but in the first step of basecoating I used Iyanden Yellow foundation paint in place of Bubonic Brown (goes on far far easier), And I used Ogryn Flesh wash over that. You probably don't need to paint the basecoat step over carapace areas, because catachan green is much darker than the result.
Still use bubonic brown in the second step of painting the body, as it's less pigmented than the foundation paint so will work better as a wash.

On the tongue/other pink fleshy bits it looked too bright just using dwarf flesh, so after painting it dwarf flesh, i washed those bits over with badab black wash, then painted them back over with dwarf as a highlight then added the other highlight to that.

After it's all painted you'll probably have to add a bit of black was to back parts of the green carapace because some of the wash might pool up and make strange light bits. Also might need to shade back some of the skin bits with ogryn flesh wash.

Enjoy!!"

This is a brilliant looking army! I love the "natural" color scheme as well...but I do have one little question.

Where or where did those Hierophants come from?
