I want plane tickets to wherever the big US Epic Tournament is for 2010.  As soon as I find out when the next major US tourney is, I'll get off my butt and make my Necrons airplane-transportable.

Given the turnout for a simple "day of Epic", it wouldn't surprise me that if a tournament were held in Bethlehem, PA, it would qualify as a major tournament.

hmmm...been following this conversation as eager to see what the US boys are thinking...but Matt O's post reminds me that I too would really like to go to the European tourney...
If I ever travel to america bringing some Epic with me was indeed an intention!

Oh you should do a European tournament; Belgium last year was ace and Matt A, Joe and I are going again this year.

Just paid for our Eurostar travel .... £63.00 return (£30.00 each way) bargain!

Foils, Epees, and Sabers tended not to raise an eyebrow... but woe betide the inexperienced tournament-goer who called them 'swords' or, worse yet, the term of art: weapons.

From the welts I received from the epees and sabers, I would classify them as weapons too.   :oh: I used to be a south paw fencer back in college for a year (till I transferred to a school with no fencing) and found that the novelty of scoring left handed wore off quite quickly when I went up against another lefty.  Never had to travel on airlines with them, however.

FYI I have the American Epic Cup in my posession.  It arrived yesterday via FedEx and is ready to be handed over to the next winning Epic team.  U.S. players - start getting your teams together!

Given the hassle involved in traveling long distances, maybe we could identitfy convenient epicenters (heh) of activity and simply force ourselves to have bi-annual epic tourneys at those locations.

Doing that requires at least one person at each location willing to run the tourney and be reliable enough to come through twice a year for the next few years.

I would like to say, for such an event in the middle-TN area,

NOT IT

The reason that there are 8+ tournaments a year in the UK is largely down to the persistence of one person.

Without the continued single mindedness of Matt O we simple wouldn't have so many tournaments in the UK.

Thanks Matt.

I may well join you; depends on finances but I'll be in contact.
Will let the Americans chat for now!

A lot of it is down to population density, even though there might be more players in the US in total... where in the UK 15-20 interested people can all be within 2hrs drive, to get that many interested people together in the USA would take 6hr drives, etc.

I was actually thinking about formulating some sort of regional effort where Epic players could match off against each other, and winners could possibly become recipients of airline ticket money that could help them get to the next big event.  I think this would require a lot of planning and more time than I have.

For now we have three main areas here on the East Coast.

Connecticut/Massachusetts
Pennsylvania/New Jersey
Maryland/Virginia/DC

MNB, ronsandt, and I are working on a couple things to encourage more people to play in the larger events.  One is top secret (unveiling in January?) but another is the Epic trophy.  I envision competitions where teams of 3-5 people compete at events and some pre-described method of calculating a winning team be used.  The trophy gets passed around rather than a new one being purchased each time.  The fun thing is each competition can be different as long as the participating teams all agree.

Where this gets ugly is when, for example, Team Memphis comes up to play against Team Allentown and Memphis walks with the trophy.  Getting it back might require some coin in terms of travel.  The balancing act is the team that wins the trophy is required to organize a tournament within x number of months.

Ditto, though I was only average. I kept wanting to hit my opponents, which led me to other pursuits.

Some of us wish it was only a 6 hour drive. In 6 hours, you can't even get half way across Texas at 80 mph. Ask me how I know that.

I better not. :)

-----

The UK is 94,000 square miles, and has 640 people per square mile.
The USA is 3,720,000 square miles, and has 80 people per square mile.

So the USA is 40x the size of the UK, and also has just 12% of the population density that the UK has... yeah I'm not surprised the US only has 3-4 tournaments per year.  :)

Well.  We have a growing group that's meeting every other thursday at the chicago battle bunker and we're up to 8-9 regulars these days.  We're going to be running a tournament sometime after the new year.

I'll also take this chance to plug the Adepticon "Bring and Battle" for Adepticon 2010.  Since the Epic Tournament hasn't been bringing in enough players, we had 4 players last year, Hank (the Adepticon head honcho) decided to make it a half day event to see if Epic was going to be sustainable.  So at this point We're going to be running it as a bring 2000 points, play as many games as you can in 5-6 hours and then we'll have some awards set up.  Legal forces are main rulebook,  Swordwind,  stuff on the GW website, Tau,  Black Legion,  LatD,  Epic Raiders,  probably Epic Siege as well and then some of the other fan lists which I feel are the most balanced.  We have no Nid players in the Chicagoland area that I know about so we haven't gotten any playtests of the nid lists yet (though there is great concern from some of the guys about the whole "Bring back models" thing for the nid lists.)  I'm currently playing around with the Demiurg 4.0 (gotten my tail handed to me by Orks in its first game) myself.
